I think we're past the point of being able to control who can get their hands on firearms :( There are so many of them! and they're just too easy to get with or without background checks :(
Not true. It is up to states now to pass tough background check laws, as well as tough purchasing laws (requiring private sellers to conduct those same tough background checks - and prove that they did) and developing better mental health support nets. Pressuring state legislators and reps will change that - and it starts with citizens who want to improve matters speaking up and not being afraid to write letters and make calls. It won't keep every mentally-ill gun enthusiast from slipping through the system, but it's better than doing nothing.

I agree we need to spend dollars on more and better mental health services, but in this case,I haven't seen that this was brought up as an issue..sounds to me like they were a**holes, cowards that shot down unsuspecting people, nothing more..

Who knows? It just happened.

But the last, oh I don't know, what - 10 or so... were caused mostly by mentally unstable people that the families of had tried to get help for and had no resources.

What's the reaction you're hearing regarding the proposed gun control legislation (Pause for Safety Act)? It sounds like a great idea and can't imagine why people would object to it but with anything gun-control related, even the good ideas get voted down.

I hadn't actually heard about it but I just looked it up. It's genius.

Who else besides the family has such an insight to these people? I think it's very empowering to be able to give those family members a way to help.

I haven't heard any backlash but I can imagine. I think it's ridiculous that gun advocates have such a (excuse me here) hair trigger reaction to anything gun control related.

I had an issue on FB with some friends and family where I said the straw man law that allows criminals to get guns through other people was insane. That caused everyone else to freak out and attack me. After much yelling, I finally got them to agree that this was a stupid loophole. I then berated them and told them it's reactions like that that make the gun advocates so unsavory to a moderate about guns like me. I have never thought people shouldn't be allowed to have guns. But the stupidity and ridiculous laws have to stop. Clearly, there are things that can be done to prevent more death without affecting the rights of average citizens. I think these people getting all up in arms about everything causes more and more people like me to move to the left. It makes them look crazy when they can't even recognize realistic and reasonable laws.

I'll keep an ear out to see what I hear and let you know.

I don’t think it can pass as written. The legislation (as I understand it) allows anyone to ask for one of these restraining orders. Noting to protect an individual from some gun-control activist going to a local gun range, or gun show, and getting the names of people on the sign-in sheets. Or getting gun owners names by other means. Then petitioning the judicial system for gun violence prevention warrants claiming that they believe these individuals are about to commit a crime, or a danger to themselves or others. So you then have a squad of police officers showing up on your doorstep, guns in hand and edgy with the idea you could be armed and dangerous, in order to confiscate your firearms.
