Wow - those are beautiful birds!Spring is finally here!
The wife and I took a trip to Kmart. She picked up yet another bird feeder. That makes 7 feeders now. I wanted to see if we could entice some birds we don’t normally observe, so I developed a mix I thought might work for the new feeder. Sunday it rained in the afternoon so we couldn't do any yard work. We spent awhile watching the birds. We were inundated with Goldfinches that have been notably absent the last couple of years. And two really cool other birds showed up on Sunday. We talked about how we've only seen a Baltimore (Northern) Oriole once in 16 years here. And later one showed up. Another bird we’ve never seen also made an appearance at the feeder, an Indigo Bunting.
Some pics taken over the weekend…

Thanks. A lot of other birds came, also, but we only took pics of the most colorful of them. And the hummingbird was gone before I even got to pick up the camera. The red headed woodpecker visited before we got the camera out and didn't return, that we saw. Flagg and two of his friends also made an appearance. Biggest freakin' crows I've ever seen.Wow - those are beautiful birds!
Think I'll go hang up the old feeder again now that Spring is here - I remember taking it down due to the raccoon dumping it out, then just gradually forgot about it - it's in the garage

I'm afraid if I put up bird feeders, the squirrels will think I'm sponsoring their own personal rave party......Nice pics!!
I posted on the Random Thread that we had an Indigo Bunting last week, which we haven't seen before. We usually put the feeders up for winter, but take them down in the spring. Theory being, it's easier for them to find food in the spring vs. winter. However, with the bunting sighting, I convinced hubby to go buy more seed and suet to see what else might show up. We haven't seen anything really unusual, but we did see lots of juveniles, including one house finch and his dad. Dad got some seeds, then feed the baby on the feeder. So cool!! Long story short, I think we'll be keeping them year round now!
oh, we have plenty of those, too! You can tell a difference in the squirrels in other parts of the neighborhood. Ours are fatter!I'm afraid if I put up bird feeders, the squirrels will think I'm sponsoring their own personal rave party......
See my above post. They just keep getting wider. No explosions!I’ve surrendered to the squirrels. I just let them have their way, anymore. The battle was just too exhausting. My new plan is to feed them so much that they explode from overeating.
We can always hope for them self exploding, right?See my above post. They just keep getting wider. No explosions!
I'd be a little concerned about walking beneath a cowbird.I am such a birdwatcher! We've got your usual birdfolk: Cardinals, Indigo Buntings, Goldfiches, Red headed finches, bluebirds, the cowbirds, the doves, every now and then a woodpecker. I just love them. I get excited about them everyday. They're all my favorites. That's a beautiful grosbeak, GNTLGNT . We had one like this
I'm hoping for hummingbirds soon. Sundrop I throw nuts out for the squirrels. I don't know if it works. I'm tempted to put vaseline on the poles of the bird feeders, but squirrels gotta eat too. They drive the dogs crazy.
Or you could keep them......raise ducklings.......eat fresh duck eggs.......plant daisies.........Big problem in DiOdom. Looked out back this morning. A pair of Mallard ducks seem to have moved into the backyard. Duck crap all over the railing of the new pool. I went out to scare them away, but they ignored me until I was about 10 feet away. And I know they will just keep coming back. Have to figure out a way to get rid of them now. Foie Gras is not out of the question.
This is what they looked like...
Have any of those flamingos left over? Try putting large animal floats in the pool. A plastic owl that is motion sensitive might help too. Good luck!!Big problem in DiOdom. Don't fancy swimming in a pool filled with duck crap droppings. And the wife got a huge daisy for a planter last Friday. Beautiful orange color I have to admit.Or you could keep them......raise ducklings.......eat fresh duck eggs.......plant daisies.........
