The old mill at Meat Camp. According to John Preston Arthur, in The History of Watauga County, NC, this was originally part of the Lindsay Patterson farm. (Historical note: Daniel Boone was a surveyor. He and his associates furnished the natural boundaries on the deed for Patterson.) It was sold to a Brown family, then somewhere down the line, a Samuel Cooper, before being purchased by John (Johannes) C. Moretz sometime after 1834. Mr. Moretz was a German but recent DNA shows possible Jewish ancestry. Moretz helped organize the Mt. Pleasant Lutheran Church. Moretz also served as an early postmaster. At that time, if you lived in that area, you could get your mail at Moretz Mill, North Carolina.

When Mr. Moretz purchased his land, Cooper already had a mill there. The mill pond had a log dam. Moretz hired 60 men to erect a stone dam. The first mill may have done grain, but Moretz added a carding mill and a linseed oil operation.. In 1847 the original mill burned (or some suggest it was set on fire). When it was rebuilt, it only processed linseed oil. Alfred J. Moretz tore down the old mill and built the one standing there today, which is known as the Winebarger mill.
Possibly the same mill seen in Where The Lilies Bloom

Just discovered this thread and this arly post is troubling me.

The Welsh for Ladybird (which is what we call ladybugs, which is what I assume this is) is "buwch goch gota" which trasnaltes literally as "short red cow." Doesn;t really work for this one does it?
Why not?

This is beautiful.
I thought so too - when I looked for the picture it seems to be a place in Greenland.

(I have been to the Thule Air Force Base in Greenland in 1992)

It was when I was stationed up in Canadian Forces Station Alert - we went there for something called "BoxTop". Wow - hard to believe that was 24 years ago - Yikes!
