That is a good idea! Then I would be fighting for space in the storage shed next fall. ;)

We were going to make some flower beds with rail ties too, maybe I could use that space for some edible plants, start out really small. Still put flowers in the front. Maybe if I was successful at growing some stuff, I would consider tearing out a small patch of grass. ;-D
Just be careful that any wood you use hasn't been treated with anything toxic that would leach into something edible. They've gotten away from using arsenic in pressure treated wood but not sure if railroad ties might have something in them that could be an issue.

Cat, I am going to try this with my across the road neighbor. She always had the best veggie and flower gardens and since the stroke hasn't done any. A neighbor offered to set up the bales of hay for us and we'll just plant and see what happens.

Ooh, yeah I would have never thought of that. Thank you! Will have to look into that.

CAT, if you find some that are good will you be singing "I've Been Working On The Railroad" while building your garden?
;-D No. The kids might. ;)

That is one of those earworm songs! And not one I particularly like to begin with. ;-D

I like the hay bale idea too, but wonder if that would serve as an extra attraction for deer and antelope. They are the main reason I haven't tried a garden yet.

CAT? You know you just set yourself up for this...........?

Oh give me a home where the buffalo roam,
Where the deer and the antelope play,
Where seldom is heard a discouraging word,
And the skies are not cloudy all day.

Chorus Home, home on the range,
Where the deer and the antelope play,
Where seldom is heard a discouraging word,
And the skies are not cloudy all day.

Where the air is so pure, and the zephyrs so free,
The breezes so balmy and light,
That I would not exchange my home on the range,
For all of the cities so bright.

The Red man was pressed from this part of the west,
He's likely no more to return,
To the banks of the Red River where seldom if ever
Their flickering campfires burn.

How often at night when the heavens are bright,
With the light from the glittering stars,
Have I stood there amazed and asked as I gazed,
If their glory exceeds that of ours.

Oh, I love these wild flowers in this dear land of ours,
The curlew I love to hear cry,
And I love the white rocks and the antelope flocks,
That graze on the mountain slopes high.

Oh give me a land where the bright diamond sand,
Flows leisurely down in the stream;
Where the graceful white swan goes gliding along,
Like a maid in a heavenly dream.

Then I would not exchange my home on the range,
Where the deer and the antelope play;
Where seldom is heard a discouraging word,
And the skies are not cloudy all day.

Cat, can you invest in a small dog run- they are chain link and you just add a panel for the roof. Am sure hubby could build one. All metal so no wood issues. That is the only way I can have a veggie garden and still harvest food.

Yeah, we could do that, too. Have to see how big of a shed we end up with first. :)

I would be happy if I could just grow some organic white potatoes. There used to be cows and wild hogs on our property so anything grown in the soil smells like pee and poop :( We also have millions of grasshoppers and I don't know how to protect the plants from them without using pesticides :(
Potatoes can be grown in containers, too, and you can cover them with a mesh cloth or wire made for gardening. We use a cloth one with the strawberries that still allows light and moisture to get through as we've had a problem with wasps taking bites out of them just as they're ripe enough to pick. :smile2:
