Raining here right now (in the week before Christmas? WHAT?!), but I heard that snow is coming back Saturday. Weirdest weather I've ever seen here. One day it's 50, the next it's 11. As a contrast, a friend in AUS sent me a pic of her thermometer, and it's 125.6 degrees F there. :waaaht:Not sure which weather is worse, to be honest.

7F right now, but real feel of -9F. Only going to get worse as the day goes on. Still telling us to expect wind chill values between 25-40 below 0.

School is on, though. I wish they would at least let them out early. Seems dumb to me, but we haven't had a snow day in years. I would think the temps today would warrant it.

Had to pick up my daughter from college last night for the holiday break/semester end. Three trips to the car with all her crap in high winds and –5 degree F real feel temps. Had to park far away because the college is putting up a new building over the parking lot close to her dorm and finding parking is now an adventure. Froze my tuckus off. :(

We're having some of that, too. Currently -5 actual temperature and high is forecast as 5 F. Sunday forecast is for high of 46. There was a no school day Monday because of the snow and we only had maybe 4". They cancel more than they used to when I was growing up because of litigation potential. They don't want to get sued if there's a bus accident and kids get hurt.

That is what I'm concerned about, are the bus kids. (And the ones who always walk, no matter what.) Some of them are quite a ways out, the busses don't even get back to town until 5:30, 6 pm on good days. Up to 7 inches of snow today plus these brutal wind chills, I think at the very least an early release would be a good idea.

We start to warm up Sunday, and Monday looks even better, but it is going to be a hunker down kind of weekend here for sure. :cold:

Early releases are problematic for working parents who then have to find alternate day care arrangements. That's the reason around here, at least, that they rarely do early releases. They do have late starts on occasion which makes no sense to me as it can create the same issue. I guess they figure the parents would have enough notice to let their employers know they'd be late but that's not always an option for the parent depending on their employer.

I understand that reasoning, it is difficult on the spur of the moment. We do have to fill out paperwork at the beginning of the year, telling the teachers what our kids are to do in case of an emergency or weather related early release, if they are to walk home or who will pick them up. But even with that in place, it still could create problems for the parents who are at work when they get the notice. The schools all have after school programs, almost like a paid daycare, for parents who cannot pick up when school lets out, but I honestly don't know how that works for a weather related early closure.
