Spoke WAY too soon. On way to see my computer tech. More later if I survive.
Okay, here was my day. Day 8 (at least--however exactly long it's been--) iTunes wins
again! Not only is iTunes continuing to kick my butt, and what I ever did to make it embark on this vendetta I do
notknow, but it's now recruiting other machinery into its diabolical scheme!
So I followed directions exactly to import checked items from iTunes to my iPhone and the lying scoundrel said it worked. This morning I got ready to go out of town, planning to listen to audiobooks from the phone through the car speakers during the trip.
Last summer I bought one of those electric lawnmowers. You are supposed to bring the battery in and charge it during the winter and I would swear I had, but this time I couldn't see how to connect the charger cable to the battery. I sent pictures both to the company which made the mower and the store which sold me the battery (because of course the battery which came with the mower was no good). So I loaded the battery and cable into my car. When I took them to the company which sold me the battery, the guy there couldn't connect it either. Apparently when we were moving things a piece of the cable was misplaced and I have to find it.
Before leaving my town, I stopped at my mechanic's garage, because I figured if I did not have the oil and tires checked something was sure to go wrong. Well, the tires were fine and he said the car didn't have that many miles on since the oil change, but neither of us could budge the hood release even with a crowbar. So that is NOT okay and I must take my car into the garage next week.
I then went to start up my audiobook and
COULD NOT FIND IT! It turned out iTunes had put the Overdrive audiobooks onto my phone but not those ripped from CD. They weren't under music or audiobooks--they weren't
anywhere. After fighting with it for awhile, I texted my computer tech, since I was going to town anyway, and drove home to pick up my laptop so he could watch exactly what I did which would probably work with him watching. I thought, well, I'd just listen to my second choice book, but found that was missing Part 1! My third choice book had Part 1 only, and of the other two, one I didn't want to listen to now and the other, like the first one, was missing entirely!
Originally I was going to drive to another town, but by now it was over an hour later so I went to a closer town. There I found a huge rummage sale where of all things was a set of
Childcraft--actually part of a 1950s set and part of a 1960s set, neither complete. I had been wanting to give a set for a baptismal gift, but the only extra set I had was my niece's, which she gave me back when she outgrew it, but she is getting it again when she has kids. She'll take it and she'll like it. So I was delighted to find this one! It's missing only one volume and finding one shouldn't be too huge of a problem. So that was good.
Meanwhile I have driven around for about a month with a car full of garden items this one guy is supposed to work on but every time we try to get together his car breaks down, he is robbed, or delayed in some other way. So this time he was delayed and I texted him to text me when he was really there. Then his phone died so he couldn't text me and by the time he did he had to leave. I had waited so long by then my computer tech also had to leave so I didn't see either of them.
I couldn't play the book off my laptop either, as the first external speaker I ordered was bad and neither the replacement nor the other I ordered as the replacement is bound to be bad too have arrived. I thought I could still do one more thing to force the wretched device to play the book in an audible manner, though. (The laptop speakers have to be played in a completely quiet room--in a moving car they would be inaudible.) So I drove to Radio Shack and the guys looked at the connectors on my car unit and the laptop and did have usable cables, but the cables cost almost as much as the speakers I'd already ordered which will probably arrive tomorrow so even if I don't get the wretched phone to work I can still play the books off the laptop. So I said bag it and ended up driving both ways not listening to anything and silently cursing technology.
I'll say this about cassette tapes--having to eject, turn over, and change tapes frequently while driving was a pain--but, I put them in the player, and they played, and quite audibly! *Sigh.* The guys at Radio Shack said to check the memory on my phone and I did--there is 8.6 GB available of an 11.8 GB capacity so I really don't see space as being the problem here! They also tried to sell me Sprint service for my phone instead of Verizon, so if it ends up saving me money it's all good. But still, Grrr!
