I don't like coffee in general, but I don't know why people would pay that kind of money for it.
I don't like coffee either. And if I'm going to consume all those calories, I want it to be a food item, not a drink!
I'm just not into drinks that much. Water is fine, say thankee.

Several years ago, we took our classes on a field trip, and were downtown at one of the museums. A mom that had come along asked me what drink I wanted at lunch. She was going to travel about 20 miles round trip to go to Sonic just for drinks and because she loves the ice they have there! I said, "You're kidding, right? I'll drink water out of the museum fountain, thanks."

Kardashians. What's-her-name Hilton. Reality TV. I will never understand the Big Deal about them.

-----

I'm not a great fan of the Beatles, either, but the Big Deal for them is that they changed the world. That is indeed a Big Deal.

-----

Pink Floyd. Gather round, kids.

Music is subjective. We all have our "OMG they are SO GOOD" musical artists (and authors and poets, etc.). But Pink Floyd gets to millions of us and gets special attention because....

Well, they were inventive, but not just for the sake of shallow avante-garde "we're cool because we are" presentation. They were truly musically inclined and had the basics down of the philosophy and theory of their craft and they applied it in lyrical and musical ways that others had not done before. Not only that, but they did it with variety in their approach.

Their music can be acoustic and grounded, or flights of synthesized science fiction fantasy, or symphonic, or just like nothing else. Their lyrics can seem mundane or be achingly resonant.

When I was a child, I caught a fleeting glimpse out of the corner of my eye. I turned to look, but it was gone. I cannot put my finger on it now; the child has grown; the dream is gone.

Well, I don't expect the above lyrics to call to anyone else, but they call to me with a sharp-edged pang. Every time. And then that mournful, suppressed-rage guitar solo. Oh, man.

They put terribly poignant and soaring lyrics together with an unsuppressed musicality. A parallel: In the geologic scale of mineral hardness, it goes from 1 (talc) to 9 (corundum). 10 is diamond, and by far and away surpasses 1 through 9. In my own music appreciation scale of expression, Pink Floyd is the diamond. No one else comes close.

I don't know if this has made sense to anyone. I hope it did. I don't know if it's agreeable with anyone. I kinda don't care. Music is subjective, and I'm describing the effect that the incomparable Pink Floyd, in the Waters/Gilmour/Wright/Mason days, has had on me.

Well said.

Wish You Were Here is mine. I have to just stop everything and listen.

And Mother. I didn't give that one much attention until I had a son and understood.

I used to be able to do Kiss at karaoke, but got out of practice and now I can't hit those notes.....
I would do just about anything to see and hear you do Kiss at karaoke.

I know Sonic ice fans. I don't get that either.

I don't get Starbucks but I do love my coffee. I just like plain coffee, no flavors, no sugar, just a little 2% milk to take the bite out. It's a serious addiction and I hear good things might happen to me if I could give it up, but no thanks. I go to bed thinking how good that first cup of coffee is going to be.

For fun - here's a picture of our coffee on vacation. The girly coffee is not mine.

I'm addicted to Chik-fil-A and I'm not happy about them removing cole slaw from the menu. Starbucks is all right but I'm loving my Keurig. Nothing comes close to it. Black with sugar or with hazelnut cream.

You men and your hazelnut cream. That's what my ogre drinks in his. Fat free hazelnut creamer - lots of it - did you see my photo? As if fat matters with all those sugar calories.

I like Chic-Fil-A's carrot salad, they took that off the menu a long time ago. But I can make it almost like their's.

Wanna see a true look of joy and amazement? Go to youtube and watch the clip from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame when Tom Petty, George Harrison's son, Prince and a bunch of others are on stage playing While My Guitar Gently Weeps. Watch Harrison's son's face when Prince does his guitar solo.....
Just went and watched. That was a virtuoso performance, by all of them. But especially the purple one.

You've got such a way with words, sisterwife!

The only hazelnuts I like are in my Nutella. But I can't bring that into the house. I'll eat the entire thing with a spoon in one night.
Hazelnut is satan's spunk.

I think this is one of the first times that I have ever choked on unexpected laughter.

"Comfortably Numb" is imho the greatest studio rock recording ever. I became a Pink Floyd fan at the release of Animals but certainly would not have had not a friend turned me on to them. They'd been around for a long time by then and I probably would've agreed with danie about not getting them. I did like a few tunes I'd heard but wasn't a fan. Same story with Led Zeppelin, except it took me much longer to like them, which I really do now. "Ten Years Gone", "What Is and What Should Never Be", and "Gallows Pole" are gorgeous. Sometimes I think we gauge an artist based on what others think the artist did well instead of finding out what else s/he has done. Sometimes this won't happen until one is living with someone who owns the stereo. For instance, most people, including rock fans, are familiar with Procol Harum's "A Whiter Shade of Pale" since it was virtually their only tune to which the public was exposed ("Conquistador", and "Homburg" - a favorite in part because my mom liked it; she was cool - were also played on Top 40 radio. Personally, I'm as sick of AWSOP as I can be). But there are a ton of incredible PH tunes to be had.

I never "got" Rap, though I've always marveled at a rapper's ability to do it; however, I really like "Ridin'" by Chamillionaire and probably would like other rap stuff were I to live with the right person.

I don't really get why zombies are the rage. Usually they're all just like the ones in Night of the Living Dead, which I honor due to them creating the icon of shambling, pale, bruised and mutilated, starving people who's great threat is that since they're already dead it's tricky how to kill them. Even when zombies are presented as runners or more like animals they're still uninteresting to me; just not scary.

What's the big deal?

Well ... that's the question, isn't it?

Just how think how quickly we would all get tired of this if everybody could understand the appeal of everything all the time.

Is that the world you want to live in? :cool2:

Just trying to get others' opinions and reasoning for why things are a big deal to them. I find it interesting and want to be open to understanding their reasons and maybe changing my mind about things.

This is my sentiment when I keep pushing Procol Harum and obscure Anthony Hopkins movies. I want to share what have become treasures for me. The SKMB is great for turning on to new musical and literary artists via those in the know as well as those who know what others don't.

Even Gun's and Roses guitar player Slash said that he cannot for the life of him figure out how to play the opening riff from When Doves Cry... He says Prince is on a whole other level when it comes to the guitar....

Prince is transcendent, and I'll admit to being a guy who took a long time to "get" prince. I happen to live (now) one town over from the fabled Paisley Park and Prince is like a god around here. I think he blew more than a few people away at the Super Bowl a few years ago ... folks who thought he was just the Purple Rain guy.
