"Comfortably Numb" is imho the greatest studio rock recording ever. I became a Pink Floyd fan at the release of Animals but certainly would not have had not a friend turned me on to them. They'd been around for a long time by then and I probably would've agreed with danie about not getting them. I did like a few tunes I'd heard but wasn't a fan. Same story with Led Zeppelin, except it took me much longer to like them, which I really do now. "Ten Years Gone", "What Is and What Should Never Be", and "Gallows Pole" are gorgeous. Sometimes I think we gauge an artist based on what others think the artist did well instead of finding out what else s/he has done. Sometimes this won't happen until one is living with someone who owns the stereo. For instance, most people, including rock fans, are familiar with Procol Harum's "A Whiter Shade of Pale" since it was virtually their only tune to which the public was exposed ("Conquistador", and "Homburg" - a favorite in part because my mom liked it; she was cool - were also played on Top 40 radio. Personally, I'm as sick of AWSOP as I can be). But there are a ton of incredible PH tunes to be had.

I never "got" Rap, though I've always marveled at a rapper's ability to do it; however, I really like "Ridin'" by Chamillionaire and probably would like other rap stuff were I to live with the right person.

I don't really get why zombies are the rage. Usually they're all just like the ones in Night of the Living Dead, which I honor due to them creating the icon of shambling, pale, bruised and mutilated, starving people who's great threat is that since they're already dead it's tricky how to kill them. Even when zombies are presented as runners or more like animals they're still uninteresting to me; just not scary.
"Comfortably Numb" is imho the greatest studio rock recording ever.

Just trying to get others' opinions and reasoning for why things are a big deal to them. I find it interesting and want to be open to understanding their reasons and maybe changing my mind about things.

An open mind is a rare treasure, and that's a fact.

"Why?" can be an elusive question sometimes. Most of the time, really. Pink Floyd, again, is an excellent example. I would have a much easier time explaining why I don't like The Wall than why I do like Animals or Wish You Were Here. It speaks more to my personality than to the music, itself. The Wall just seemed like it was trying too hard to me when I was 17. And it was so ubiquitous on the radio that I just got sick of it. I don't think that's the same thing as not getting what the big deal was. A lot of times kids will be contrary just for the sake of it, but even now I can't hear cuts from the magnum opus without wondering what all the fuss was about. To my taste, there is so much Floyd that is so much better.

Matters of taste.

Who can really say?

The film Close Encounters of the Third Kind. One of the biggest letdowns of all time. Luckily I attended with three people as unimpressed as I was.

I have loved this movie since I was a kid (I'm 35 now).

I guess it is slow for some people, but I have never disliked "slow" movies. In this particular one, I love discovering things little by little along with the characters. They have a complete mystery at the start and then we end up with a history-making and life-changing contact with this advanced race (who has been monitoring us for quite some time). I think Mr. Spielberg is talented at showing me things that awake my sense of wonder.

I also loved the music by John Williams. From the more traditional tracks to the ones used to communicate with the mother ship.

Wanna see a true look of joy and amazement? Go to youtube and watch the clip from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame when Tom Petty, George Harrison's son, Prince and a bunch of others are on stage playing While My Guitar Gently Weeps. Watch Harrison's son's face when Prince does his guitar solo.....
....that was more than amazing, and Holy Canole!, young Master Harrison looks like dad!......

...let's see, and I may miss a couple...The Beatles I enjoyed from a harmony/musicianship standpoint, and yeah-some of their writing was good-but no more stellar than other acts or artists...Pink I thoroughly enjoy-because of my philosophical bent-and yeah, they could get a bit full of themselves...Zep?....some of their material was just was to "precious", they were at their best when they just frickin' rocked it...and all members were icons with their talent....Close Encounters was a well executed film-but I don't think it was any kind of landmark cinema-to me, it was more a showcase for John William's score...and if "Reality" TV were toilet paper, you know what I'd do with it....American Idol?. I'm like a neutered dog-just didn't get it......don't care....Eminem is a singular voice in Rap, he proved that that style of spittin', isn't ethnically based....and he is one of those that raps what he knows-not chest thumping drivel all the time...my "I don't get its" list is long, but topping it is Penis pill commercials...I think every red-blooded male is aware that if their Johnson has sprung a leak, that there are pills available and that they can be taken in a bathtub....they are so prevalent on television that they are now part of the landscape of same and as a sufferer of same, I am irritated and angry to have my problem continually thrown in my face everytime I switch the idiot box on.....

Yes, Prince can wail on guitar! He doesn't play nearly enough on his albums. Purple Rain and When Doves Cry are two songs I wish I had written!

Taylor Swift. Or as I refer to her: Two-Note Taylor. What's the big deal? She comes onto the music scene and within two years she's winning every major award, beating out the likes of well-established artists like Reba McIntire and Dolly Parton? Really? Really? To me she represents Corporate Country to the max.

Agreed! She is awfully cute though :)

But SwiftDogs aren't country fans (except for Johnny Cash. Because as we all know Johnny Cash is everything!).

Other musicians said much the same thing about Jimi Hendrix. "Yeah, we watch him. We see what he's doing. We still don't know how he does it."

Hendrix is a GOD in SwiftDog's guitar universe. He was on another planet compared to everyone else. You play Hendrix songs but you should never try to play them like him. You will fail miserably!

Seinfeld. I know it was on TV a long time and everyone raved about it. But I just don't get it. I tried to watch
it a couple of times. To me, it's just not funny. Must be my warped sense of humour doesn't apply to this
show.
Im with you! I never got Seinfeld efter. Beatles i only had to listen to an album to get. Rap and Hiphop i dont get. Romantic comedies i dont get.

This thread is for posting about anything that most other people seem to think is a BIG DEAL, but you don't get it. Then someone can try to convince you why it IS such a BIG DEAL.

For example, you guys talk a lot about Pink Floyd in the music threads, but I don't get it. What's the big deal about them? I have tried to listen to them but am not impressed. I grew up in the 70s/80s, so I heard them on the radio. I just don't get it.

What's the big deal?????
Agreed. Add The Doors to the list of "HUH?" bands.

My Favorite YT vid EVER. :) So many people have no idea how talented Prince is (largely his own fault for emphasizing himself as a one-note sex joke)

Same here. Never understood what the appeal of the show was. My wife loved it. But, on the other end of the spectrum, I think Family Guy is about the funniest show ever on TV, my wife just thinks it's low brow and crude....which of course, it is, which is probably why I like it so much..lol

Huffpost. Who are these people? Sorry your kid fell down.

I am am wicked good mother and make cupcakes, but look at those people over there.

Let's go to church and talk it over.

I replied to myself. yeek.

I am not a mother, nor did my kid fall down. I am just tired of reading of people with blogs that they give space to there.

A thousand words about how a shoe was tied and the deep meaning to it.

Or a wedding.

Or a seashell on the beach that spoke to them.

yesh.

I know, don't read Huffpost. :smile2: :suspicion:
