I've personally determined that three factors must be firmly in place for a movie to be a good movie; they are: 1) Good direction; 2) Good acting; 3) Good writing. Imho, without all three of those (lighting, editing, costumes, various kinds of effects, are not required, though they are handy) all movies are failures in terms of art.

No taste for trash? You mean you can't just sit and enjoy some sleazy 70s grindhouse, or a Roger Corman production, just for gits and shiggles (and without the MST3K bots crackin jokes at the screen)?

The Wonder Boys. Hey, this was pretty good. Might have to seek out the novel. Never read any Michael Chabon, but I'd read this.

And a re-watch:

House of 1,000 Corpses. Didn't care for this the first time around, not as much as Devil's Rejects, but got a real kick out of it this time. Like a carnival ride through a kitschy horror nightmare. Love Sid Haig's Captain Spaulding, and Shari Moon's 'moon' (derf), but still think Rob Zombie's dialogue sucks. Give it 3 out of five corpses.
Chabon is quite the writer. I think you'd like him!

Yeah, Midnight Run is awesome.

The Drop, a crime drama starring Tom Hardy and James Gandolfini, in what I think may have been his last role. Pretty good flick, slow and tense and smart.
I loved The Drop. Script, cast, sets: all perfect. I'd love to see Hardy and Noomi Rapace together in another movie, and I really liked Matthias Schoenaerts as the bad guy. He was incredible in Rust and Bone and Bullhead, but this was the first time I'd seen him in an English language movie.

Yes, I watched that the other night. I'd never seen Hardy before and was impressed. I think the movie was perfectly cast.

I've had a dvd of The Drop sitting on my coffee table for a couple of months now- all this talk about how good it is, it's making me want to watch it.

You should, Dana. Exceptional performances all around

BTW, have you seen LEGEND (Hardy's movie about the Krays) yet? It never came here, not even the DVDs. I'm hoping to run across it on Amazon.

You're turning me on to a lot oaf new movies, skimom!
This one is a claymation animal movie :) A lot of his 'regular' actors do the voice work, and it's very funny. Lots of broad humor for the LilMan, sly asides for the adults, and no bad language (they literally say 'cuss' anywhere it seems like they want to use a swear word). It's a family favorite.
