Just got done with The Wolf of Wall Street.

It was written like it was 45% Scorcese, 45% Tarantino, and 10% Robin Williams, but with the funny parts taken out. I didn't care for the characters. I didn't think it was particularly brave with the subject matter. Penny stock brokers who gleefully violate SEC rules, are cocaine and other substance abusers, and hire prostitutes while putting on a facade of a family life?

That's low-hanging fruit there, Marty. We hate them already, okay? If you want to be brave and revelatory, how about going after the mortgage security wheeler-dealers who brought about the crash and walked off scot-free? Now, there would have been an incisive movie.

On the plus side: There was good acting. A lot of the pretty woman looked good naked. The direction really was quite good, with a lot of clever technique.

But the theme was Ugly Unlikable Chaos, and it went on for three freakin' hours, and I was wishing it was over in an hour 40.

I guess this is a negative review.
Well, at least it holds the record for the usage of the 'F' word in cinematic history (so far).

We watched it and I think I would have liked it better had it not been so long. I liked it, horrible characters but I got some good laughs out of it and I'm a big fan of Leo's.

Have you seen "Get Shorty?"

I like him, too, although I haven't seen him a whole lot. I will skip saying anything about Titanic. He was good in Catch Me If You Can, The Aviator (although that was a forgettable movie for me), and especially good in The Departed.

I will state for the record that Leo is the best actor we've got. He doesn't get his due respect because he is still pretty young. Go watch him in What's Eating Gilbert Grape. His acting range is unmatched.

Another good one when he was young is The Basketball Diaries. Leo is great in that one. The movie is very good too but the movie has this strange thing where the dates seem to shift. The book was a story that takes place in 1960s New York and sometimes the movie seems to shift from the 60s to the 90s. I'm not sure if they started it as a period movie from the 60s and didn't have enough money to finish it that way or what. Other than that, it's very good. That movie also has a weird Soprano's connection. There are 3 or 4 actors in that movie that eventually would end up as stars on the Soprano's.

One of the most gut-wrenching scenes I've ever watched (other than when Sophie-Meryl Streep-is forced to make her 'choice' in Sophie's Choice) is when Jim-Leo's character- is in the hallway outside his Mother's apartment. Even after seeing it a few times it is still so hard to watch. It hasn't become trite or old which is a sign that there is alot of acting 'magic' happening there. I get chills whenever I see it. About the time shifting- maybe it was done deliberately by the director? After all, it is a film about the horrors of drug use and if anything can mess with your mind or time frame it's drugs. I do know that they added an un-needed scene just for Leo, which is the 'terminator-like' classroom part. Didn't happen in the book (which is based on real life events in Jim Carroll's life). That was a pretty rough read, that book.
