Watched Forrest Gump (maybe for the fourth time) on Netflix the other night. This movie still amazes me-Tom Hanks is so brilliant! I can't believe Gary Sinise didn't win an Oscar for his performance, but there were a lot of great movies out that year (Shawshank came out the same year, I think).

Every new movie that I love, has to first fight with this one for top spot, they seldom come close.
Tom Hanks is completely brilliant, love him.

Almost Famous (2000)
Available to stream on Netflix as of yesterday. It had been so long since I watched this, I forgot what a stellar cast it has! I really like Jason Lee.

Kate Hudson was so good in this movie.

I read Gregg Allman's autobiography and in it, he talks a little bit about when the very young Cameron Crowe showed up to do a story on the Allman Brothers. They couldn't believe that Rolling Stone sent a kid. Gregg Allman seemed pleased with the way the events were depicted in the movie. The band in the movie represented a composite of The Allman Brothers, Zeppelin and a couple other bands Cameron did articles on when he was starting out.

I love this movie! It's the only movie I like Kate Hudson in, too!
The Tiny Dancer scene is my favorite. And I can't believe that Patrick Fugit is all grown up--he was recently in Gone Girl, and I couldn't place who he was at first!

Forrest Gump - a dissenting voice:
As a middle-aged Brit who has had a relatively positive life, I positively loathed the premise on which this film was based - if you are good-hearted then you will triumph against adversity no matter what obstacles life throws into your path (with the subtext "In America"). Sorry, it just ain't true, even in America. I'm afraid to say that I loathed the way that America took this message to its heart even more than I loathed the message.

And I have always disliked the way the Academy often favours "disease of the week" performances (I always rated Ernie Hudson's performance as a similarly afflicted character in "The Hand That Rocks The Cradle" - why did that get overlooked?).

But let me be fair. There is a short sequence where Gump tries to ask Jenny if his son is normal - maybe 20 seconds in total. Hanks' performance in this sequence is nothing short of phenomenal and, on its own, justifies his Oscar in this film, even if the rest of it is glutinous and mendacious nonsense with tolerable effects.

I disagree. I don't need a culture or a subtext to tell me what makes me feel good, or feel bad.. or to feel at all. Forrest Gump made me feel a lot of things, mainly because of a top cast, (Tom Hanks absolutely shone in this role) they delivered.
This will always be one of my top 2 movies of all time, I'm not sure if it's because it is what I needed right then (at the time of my first viewing) or for some other reason, but sometimes it doesn't necessarily matter what the subject matter is, sometimes a movie just entertains, without a specific reason.

It's a wonderful world - there are some things I like a great deal, some things I dislike a great deal, sometimes I have the same opinion as someone else, sometimes it is the complete opposite. I quite understand that Forrest Gump touches some people, and that's great: it was intended to. I'm one of the ones who had the exact opposite reaction to it: I thought it was trite, excessively sentimentalised and, worst of all, completely untruthful. But I wouldn't seek to change anyone's mind over it, merely to exchange opinions. And you're quite right, you don't need a reason to explain why you enjoyed it so much.

As I said, Hanks was terrific in it, Sinise was good, too. I don't like Sally Fields much and FG didn't change my opinion. Robin Wright has been better. And what state is it that allows someone with Forrest's limitations to have custody over a small boy?

It was just one of those movies you go to to be entertained and suspend disbelief. It was silly fun
