There wasn't any info on why the cop kept the knife in the article above so I went to the TMZ site (yes, I am humiliated that I went to TMZ for information ;-D). According to the article there, the cop just kept it as a memento and was in the process of framing it and called a police friend of his to get the case number so he could add it to the piece of art he was creating. The friend was disgusted and told his superiors about it. If this is true, this is pretty disgusting. I'm not sure much can happen to the guy because he is retired from the force and the case has already been decided. It can't really be withholding evidence if the case is over, can it?

I've not seen this story pop up on a mainstream news site yet. I'm withholding my belief in this story for a while.

My guess is that if they find human DNA the policeman who kept the knife could be charged in some way. If evidence is found relative to the Simpson murder trial I don't think anything can be done to OJ because of double jeopardy.

I would think any DNA would be degraded by now?
This is an interesting development. I would think that there wouldn't be any DNA left, though nowadays forensic science can do incredible things. It's my personal belief that the LAPD wanted to protect OJ, perhaps sincerely believing him to be innocent, anyway causing them to conduct a lackadaisical initial investigation. I base this opinion on things I've read about the murder. Nowadays there's no such sympathy for OJ; no coverup is likely, plus he's been acquitted. I'm looking forward to following the story while having no particular dog in the fight (though I believe OJ guilty); he's locked up for a long time now on other charges.

oh my. the officer speaking called it a knife that might be related to the Oj case, corrected himself and said, the Nicole Brown Simpson case.

What about Ron Goldman? Fred is going to be so upset. I've heard him speak about the fact that no one ever speaks about his son being murdered, just Nicole.

When the knife was found, the trial was over. Is it still evidence when the trial is over? Once someone is acquitted, the case can't be reopened. So I'm not sure that the policeman did anything illegal. If the knife does turn out to be a murder weapon, it will be interesting to see what the legal ramifications are for the policeman that kept the knife.

So what is the purpose if this now? It has been over at least 15 years ago!
O.J. is protected from double jeopardy. He cannot get in trouble for the double homicide now...
And, it's not going to do anything with the civil verdict either.
Is the retired policeman looking for his 15 minutes of fame???
So, again what is the purpose of the article?
