I used 'tome' in a recent post. If it sounded pretentious, I'm sorry. Pardon me all over the place, but that was simply the word that popped into my head while writing. I suppose I shoulda went back and dumbed-down my words, but, shucks, I do that sorta thing in real life so much, I kinda don't wanna have to do it here, too.

I like the word Tome, dang it. I don't take no lip from no editor neither.

(I'm just funnin our beloved mamaski, BTW, don't nobody go hacking on me)
You do whatever you want to do, Muskie. You're all right by me :) Just a random thought that shambled through my noggin, not related to any post (in fact, I didn't even think of posts--I was reading a review that made me snortlaugh and eyeroll)

I use 'works' all the time, speaking of King's body of work, in the same way I'd speak about Beethoven's works. (Classical music: opus=work).
I think I may have said "this or that book was his best work", as well. I don't see how that's pretentious. I like it because it can almost be used while referencing art from any vocation.
I understand your point with the other word but, as a writer, I've used it to describe bulky books like The Stand or It.
Mea culpa, Doc. No offense intended--I wasn't even thinking about posts. I was eyerolling through a review and it occurred to me. Sometimes I don't think things through before I mouth off. I apologize.

Oh, no apologies necessary, lol. I figured you had your reasons. Random Thoughts is the perfect spot to be extemporaneous. :D

I find myself using the word epistle often. Even before I got Catholic. I try to reign it in sometimes. Sometimes I let it fly. It's all fine muskrat. I'm envious of those of you with big vocabularies.
I used the word "clambered" in a report once, and my boss got all worked up about it,claiming it was too esoteric of a word to use..he actually got upset enough to make me change it to climbed or scrambled,I forget which..que sera,sera..

I have existed on the lunatic fringe my entire life and have never run across the word "clambered" in all the metaphysical books I read. Esoteric my eye. :black_eyed:

Huh? Metaphysical, why? He just meant it was not going to be understood because it was not in common use..I used it specifically because entry was gained to a house, and the guy had to climb and scramble with his feet, left marks on the siding as he did so,which is pretty much the definition of the word..try as I might,he wasn't having it though!

Esoteric was one of the words the loonies I once hung out with used to described themselves. *Wistful sigh* I miss them.

Your boss should invest in a good dictionary. Clambered is a great word to describe the movements of the guy who gained entry into the house in your report.

I have always had a landline and want one forever! But 2 weeks ago my daughters bought me a cell phone,
a Sony experia, and I am having one hell of a time learning how to use it. I tried to make a call last night
and nothing happened. I pressed the number in my contact list and listened and no dial tone, no one
answering, nothing. So it's back on the desk until I figure out how to make a call. Pretty pathetic huh :hammer:
(I checked the volume and it is on)
Latest Smartphones - Sony Mobile (Canada)

Not sure if this would help? Never actually heard of this brand before - Xperia?

There is a tutorial for the other model also. Good Luck. I truly know how you feel about cell phones.
Well I watched the tutorial and it said a lot about apps and camera and setting up the phone with the sem card but that was it. So, the next time I talk to one of the girls (daughters) I will get them to walk me through it over the phone ( a land line :)) Still :hammer::facepalm_smiley:

I switched to an Apple 6S from a Galaxy S3 and that was a bit of a transition - see if you can find a friend with the same phone (but to be honest I had never even heard of this type of phone before - I must lead a sheltered life!)

My first was a 77 Volare four door sedan in green (yikes!) - my dear old Dad picked it out for me and I went to pick it up, then paid him 2000 bucks for it (gradually at 200 bucks a month for 10 months)

Might not have been very sexy but it was like a tank! Slant six engine with really great upholstery - a good learner car - if I backed up into a cement lamplight base there was not even a scratch :butterfly:
