Mary - this happened to my brother many years ago and back then they said he went into a 'convulsion'. He ended up on phenobarbital.

Of course we are talking 40 years ago so even if modern medicine has improved in some ways (yet not in others) I am pretty sure they got your diagnosis right.

Back in the 60s, I don't think they realized at that time it was just a febrile seizure. For the rest of his life my Mom treated Billy like he was made of china.

I hope you and your family have more luck in the future regarding health concerns! Best of luck that 2014 turns into a happy, healthy year for you all.

Holly, the doctor at the hospital said not to put her in a lukewarm bath. I always did that with Karen, and Kaden, and it helped bring the fever down. I don't understand why not, it always helped to bring that fever down.
I'm so glad she is acting ok this morning. She is bitching with her brother, so that is a good thing!
Not lukewarm, coldish but not freezing. Amazing how quickly kids rebound! I'm so glad! And ear infections hurt so bad!

She took a nap, and her fever went to 100. Sam gave her the Advil, and now it's back down again. She ate good for lunch which is good. She didn't want dinner last night or even a cookie. Karen should have known something was wrong when she doesn't want to eat, cause she eats all day long!I'm scared to see tonight come, because kids seem to be sicker at night.

Did you ever have a kid with croup Mary? That can be quite frightening when they start making that barking cough sound. I was told to turn the shower on hot to warm up the bathroom then just sit on the edge of the tub holding the baby as the steam and warmth seems to help loosen the bronchi (something like that). I am hoping that Amoxicillin does the trick and clears up the ear infection. She should feel better once the pain is gone.

No, Neesy, I haven't. Karen is going to try to get her in to see her regular doctor tomorrow.
Karen watches her nephew over to Sam's parents house 5 days a week for half a day, and the nephew had the pink eye, and ear infections a few weeks ago. I told Karen that from now on if her sister-in-laws kids are sick to not take Kat over there for her to catch it.

The reason they don't like them to have a tepid bath anymore is that they've realised that it's hard to get the temperature to the right point where it won't cause shivering... when we shiver and get goosebumps, the pores in the skin close over preventing the escape of heat... therefore just further warming up the core temperature.
It's better to remove outer clothing layers and try to control the temperature with medicine as a preventative, give four hourly even if the temperature doesn't seem to be spiking too high, just until the antibiotics have had a chance to begin working on the ear infection.

Poor wee lass, ear troubles are very uncomfortable and fever always makes them feel miserable.

Flake is so smart :) Best to do what the Dr. orders. Do you guys use a rice pack, Mary? My two oldest were prone to ear infections, and they got such relief from a warm rice pack, especially in the nighttime (until the meds knocked the infection down, of course).

Not sure what a rice pack is. Can you explain a little more to me, please?
Karen gave her some milk because she was asking for it. She threw that all up in the bedroom floor, and all over Karen, and herself.
Then she had a couple of bouts of diarrhea. This poor baby can't catch a break today. Hopefully she will sleep better tonight, and tomorrow will show improvement in her.

I think a rice pack is like a Magic Bag - you put it in the microwave for approximately 1 minute or so and it heats up.

I actually have one from when they first came out (70s or 80s?) that we found in my Mom and Dad's house after Mom died and Dad was incapacitated. It still works today!

Aha! Modern medicine continues to evolve. The daughter is now 22 so it's been years. Not that one should ever do this to a baby or child, but when I have a fever, the chills make me so miserable that I have to soak in a nearly scalding hot tub just to get comfortable. I'm sure it can't be good for me, but I just can't stand the shivers. You're good with your medical knowledge Flake! Ya'll amaze me around here.

Poor little precious! Wonder if it could be the antibiotic making her sick?

We made one by putting about a cup or so of rice inside of an old glove-type potholder and sewing up the end. My friend did it between two square potholders, as well. You toss it in the microwave for about a minute to warm, then hold it against the ear (or any other hurty place that needs a long-lasting heating pad, actually). Always check the temp first, of course, but we like it because the child can lay on the side opposite the sore ear and lay the rice pack on the sore ear. It's warm & soothing, and gives a ton of relief right away.

I wouldn't be surprised if a combination of fever and antibiotics are upsetting her wee tummy.
@pegasus216 maybe try her on a decent yoghurt (high rate of bifidus and acidophilus) while she is on antibiotics, it will help to stimulate some of the good bacteria in her stomach lining.

...Mary, she's coming as normal for a little one...the vomiting/loose stools is more than likely from the Amoxicillin, combined with all the fever reducers on her tiny stomach and possible drainage from the infection...I strongly disagree with the giving of Ibuprofen & Acetaminophen together...that rough on the stomach and the liver at any age...staggered four to six hour intervals will keep the lid on her being febrile/fevered and will giver her tummy a break...that's a lot for her itty-bitty system to process...also, Pedialyte alone or mixed with her favorite juice will restore lost electrolytes and nutrients and they are also available in popsicles....
