...Prison science fact: you can make a deadly "shank" from a Styrofoam cup....find a heat source, and as the cup melts, mold it into the shape of a knife blade, and when it cools-it will be solid and sharp enough to inflict a killing wound....yeah, I work in a strange environment....
Just saw that on Mythbusters!

I used to camp a lot in my younger years (in a tent) and it is true - once it gets dark you pretty much have to go to bed.

(Now we have a tent trailer with electricity so it's not quite the same).
I miss camping. It's one of those things in life which are good, perhaps essential, for a person who must make time for it, such as the arts.

Tractor beams are now a reality
Submitted by Rowdy on Mon, 10/20/2014 - 19:57
Australian National University reports that physicists have now developed a small-scale, reversible “tractor beam” based on laser technology. Once a well-known technology on television shows, the technology seems to bring another facet of fiction into reality.

ANU:
“It is the first long-distance optical tractor beam and moved particles one fifth of a millimetre in diameter a distance of up to 20 centimetres, around 100 times further than previous experiments.”

Cool! As for what this could be good for:
“The new technique is versatile because it requires only a single laser beam. It could be used, for example, in controlling atmospheric pollution or for the retrieval of tiny, delicate or dangerous particles for sampling.”

Not quite the dream tech that would allow us to shift asteroids off course, or even detain spaceships, then, but that may all still be in the cards for the (distant) future. Who knows? For now, it’s another future tech entry to cross off the wish list! Up next: Cloaking devices… Please?
