I haven't had soda since the 90s, but there was a time when it was the only beverage I consumed.
Always Pepsi in a glass with ice. Sometimes I still crave it but I don't give in :)

Question for the Southern folks: if you're out and you want soda, but not an actual Coke, what do you say?
The waiters ask "What to drink?" And in this case we will say specifically Coke, Sprite, Mountain Dew, etc.
I have deviated and asked "What kind of soft drinks do yo have?"
Mostly I ask friends, "hey, will you grab a coke for me" and they say "sure, what kind?" ;)

I never heard anyone saying 'soft drinks' in real life.
I don't know how common it is but many convenient stores have SOFT DRINKS painted or printed above the beverage case, along with BEER or SPIRITS. I guess it depends on where one is. Fountain drinks is basically the same thing. I agree, the term 'soft drinks' is a little antiquated.

As a kid, I had a wide range of favorites; Dad's root beer, RC cola, the Shasta brand of kiwi-strawberry, 7up, and of course I liked Sprite and Coke. And when we went up to Virginia City, we always got a Virgil's cream soda. In a little brown glass bottle.

As an adult, I started drinking Coke and nothing but. I preferred it in a can, as it seemed to have the most "bite" that way. I refused, utterly and completely, to touch Pepsi. If a restaurant had Pepsi, I drank water. I can't even begin to tell you the amount of crap I got for being so prejudiced, but there is a difference! There is! Coke is better!

But then one day I just lost the taste for soda. I used to be a Coke-a-day type of girl, and then...nothing. Just didn't like it anymore.

Now, my husband has introduced me to Sanpellgrino; they have a blood orange flavor that's really quite satisfying. And since our local Whole Foods sells Virgil's, every so often I'll still indulge myself. It tastes just as good now as it did when I was ten...

We don't have Beer or Spirits in convenience stores round here.
When I was in PA, a lot of stores are still closed on Sundays for that too.

A&W sparking vanilla diet cream soda.

Diet Coke with rum or cheap whiskey.

At an A&W, a root beer float.

Long ago, I weaned myself from regular soda pop to diet, thinking it would be better for me. Well, maybe not so much. I rarely drink soda pop at all anymore. Coffee, tea, and water are my beverages of choice.
