I'm editing a book right now, and I DESPERATELY wish the author had this chart. Or, preferably, an expanded version of it. I've dealt with so many instances of repeated words and phrases, like sneered, snorted, chuckled, smirked, scoffed, what the hell, in shock, things like that. Instead of just slapping a phrase like "He stared in shock" at something, I wish the author would explore the shock. Why the shock? What's going through his mind? "What he was seeing shouldn't happen in the real world. It couldn't happen. Yet there it was, standing in front of him, staring him down." Or explain it differently. "He couldn't wrap his brain around it." SOMETHING. Using the same word or phrase over and over isn't just shallow, lazy writing, it's poor writing. I can't wait until this project is over. I'll concentrate on my own writing. And painting. Crafts. Whatever.

I haven't been home a week, and I'm already ready to pack up and leave. I've been awakened every. Single. Day by asshat neighbor's dogs, and kept awake well into the night. I've just spent two weeks up north, able to sleep unfettered by this kind of nonsense, and I find that I'm simply not willing to deal with it. The city isn't going to do anything about it. The guy's mother works at town hall, for piss sake. When there's a court date, there she sits at the bench, sneering at me while the police chief explains to me why there won't be a hearing yet again. The guy FINALLY got charged for violating the noise ordinance (dog barking, specifically) in January. Here it is June. I flew back this past Wednesday because we had a court date on Thursday. But, sure enough, I got a phone call on Thursday telling me court's been delayed yet again, until next month. Well, next WEEK, but it's still July.
When they finally charged this guy, I foolishly thought that meant they were actually going to do something. Talk about naive. It was just another stall. When, IF we ever do get into court, they're going to hear all the evidence, I'll say my piece, so will my neighbors, and then the whole thing is going to be dismissed. They're not going to do anything.
What that means is that since it was dismissed once, the city won't be willing to charge him again, because it's a case they can't win so they won't be willing to waste the city's time or money trying. Sorry.
The only legal recourse I'll have is civil action. And I don't have the money for that. I've talked to every lawyer in the state, and not one of them is willing to take on a dog barking case, let alone on contingency. Maybe if I had thousands to pay up front, I could get one to look at it, but without that, I'm flat out of luck. And I just don't have thousands laying around. Who does?
Unless I hit the lottery or pen a best-seller, the only recourse I have is to leave. I love my man, I love my house. I shouldn't have to leave it because some asshat can't manage his animals - and the city won't force him to. But my choices are slim. I've lost sleep, been put on increasing anti-anxiety medications, not to mention higher and higher doses of sleeping pills, developed TWO ulcers, and I'm not getting any work done. I can't live like this. I shouldn't have to.
I'll sleep on people's couches. I don't care. I'm done.

I will say this, though. when I do get this jerk in front of a judge for civil action, I'm not just going to name him. I'm suing the city, too. This favoritism for a jerk whose mom works at town hall and cousin on the city council (hell, the name of the street we both live on is his last name) CLEARLY show nepotism going on in this case. And whatever I do win, I'll use to leave. Just leave. I'm DONE.

My concern here is someone will do something to the dogs out of desperation. Not saying you would Lepp, but other neighbors feeling as ignored as you might just be done too. I wish there was some way to get them to shut up!

I don't think anybody would hurt them. We've all been dealing with this for years and nobody's done it yet. I don't blame the dogs and I don't think they do either. This is simply not the place to keep several (up to 8, maybe 10) large hunting dogs. We live on residential lots inside the city limits. The kennel is small and there's simply nowhere for them to run, nothing for them to do. They're miserable. I've talked to a pit bull rescue organization out of New Orleans, but they don't come out this far (West of Baton Rouge). They won't shut up. They've been trained by his lack of action to bark and howl. The only remedy is for him to move them, and he's not about to do that. He doesn't care. He sent me a text telling me that if I don't like it, I can move. The city won't force him to do anything, so why should he?
Sorry about your continued trouble, Lepplady. May I ask you if there are any other neighbors on the street who are also being bothered by this jerk's dogs? Maybe, if there are, you can band together against him AND his Mother?
Oh yeah. The neighbors are as irritated as I am. They're all going to be there on court day, if that day ever comes. Including the police officer that lives across the street a couple doors down. And including every single member of the local police force, each of whom has stood on my back porch at 2, 3, 4 am, all hours, listening to them bark and howl. I've got videos on disk and on my phone, many on FB. Have a listen sometime and see what I deal with day and night, just for giggles. All this, and I'm convinced that it's going to be dismissed. Because if it's not, they're going to have to charge him every week until he moves or shuts 'em up (which is impossible). I doubt they'll be willing to do that, what with mom working there and all. So they'll pat him on the head and send us all home.
One thing you can be assured of: all of these people have found a place on my pages, from the inept police officer to the corrupt workings at town hall. The dog owner himself is being dealt with severely (on paper, of course). My latest method of dispatch for the inconsiderate dog owner in my book is rabies. I wouldn't wish harm on any living thing in reality (karma and all), but on paper, anything goes.

I don't know how you've made it this long. I always wonder how the people who own the barking dogs get any sleep. Or are they just never home?
Could you get a change of venue due to the relatives in town hall? I had a friend in a court case where the judge had like taken a class with a relative on the opposing side (they only knew each other by name), but that was reason enough to get another judge assigned to the case.
