SkiMom, When you make your own laundry soap do you use the recipe that makes a five gal bucket? The fels naptha/borax/soda etc recipe? And if so, how many loads do you get approx from your bucket?? I want to make this, but wondered how much it really makes? I do tons of laundry a week and I don't like using commercial soap w/chemicals. Thanks! Also those muffins sound awesome!
I've been curious about that recipe. Is it any good?

I've never made the liquid - but I have made the powder - I've got the mixture on my pinterest board. I liked it for a while, but our clothes looked a little dingy to me, and someone suggested adding oxyclean - and I thought, well, I may as well use commercial detergent if I have to add chemicals. So I went back to using Gain. Maybe the liquid works better. skimom2 - post your recipe please. If you say it works I'll give it a try again. I also made my own dishwasher detergent. It would cake up - I didn't like it much.

Here, there and everywhere.
The only thing that stops me from having work done is how much of a turn-off it is when I see a guy who's had work done. Does that make sense?

RE: homemade soap powder - I did it, and really liked it at first, but I agree with Holly - after a while things looked dingy. Also - grating that Zote/Fels Naptha is a CHORE and I feel like my time is surely worth something. And I'm picky about what my laundry smells like, so I switched back to commercial detergent. Not only that... I did something I swore I'd never do, which is buy Tide Pods. They're so expensive, but my laundry is bright and smells delicious! I just cracked down on my peeps' (and my own) laundry habits. I'd wear something for two hours and throw it in the hamper, but now I wear it once, and then hang it up inside out so I know I can wear it one more time before it needs to be washed. Of course, this doesn't apply to t-shirts worn to run errands in the heat of deep Southern July. And, I buy cheaper powder to use for towels, wash clothes, and dog blankets.

Oh, they were--I like that combo in scones, too :)

I don't make a huge amount at a time--no room to keep it. We have a variety of sensitivities to different commercial soaps, so it's just easier (and cheaper) to make my own--clothes get cleaner, too!

I mix 4 C borax, 4 C washing soda, & 2 bars Fels-Naptha (I grate it into the other powders, mix them, then run it through an old food processor to make sure it's all evenly distributed). Occasionally I'll add a couple of drops of essential oil, if I have it, but it smells nice any way--clean. Each load gets 2T powder (a standard coffee scoop). I takes me about 5-10 mins to make a batch, and this much fits into an almost 2lb coffee can. I have to make more about once a month, and that's doing a buttload of laundry (6 people, 2 with dirty jobs). I've seen recipes to make it into a liquid, but it seems like too much work to me when the powder works fine if you start it in hot water--just enough to dissolve the powder, then you can turn it to cold. :) Since I started using this, we haven't had a single skin reaction from anyone. I wouldn't go back!
