I sleep with an air purifier close to me, which is fairly loud. It does help. I used to sleep with the TV on, way before I struggled with insomnia. After reading all of the studies about "unplugging" from technology (computer, TV, smartphone, etc.) several hours before bed time, I quit doing that.
My niece has had quite a few problems with sleep and attention, and her doctor has noted that quite a bit of the issue could have developed because she has literally never slept without a TV or music going. Apparently, you can't achieve REM sleep in those conditions--your brain keeps listening, so you never get actual rest. Then, if you become accustomed to it, your brain makes a note when the noise (TV, music. etc.) stops and wakes you up rather than dropping into the REM sleep you so desperately need, thereby robbing you of ANY rest. It's a vicious cycle, and hard to get out of. Worth it, though, if you can and your poor tired brain gets sleep
