The one good thing that could come out of this is heightened awareness of heart attacks.

Cardiac disease is the number one cause of death in the US. A common symptom of a heart attack is sudden death. A heart attack can happen to anyone, at any age. Since I'm a heart attack survivor, doing much better than poor Tom Petty, I know a little bit about it.

Yes, there are things you can do to increase your odds. Talk to your doctor about those things. You don't need to destroy your quality of life to be in a better position against this adversary.

Tom Petty wasn't the icon to me that he was to some, but he sure could make some good music and put on a good show. All condolences to him, his family, his friends, his fans. As I write this, maybe this will be a Mark Twain moment - "Rumors of my death are greatly exaggerated."

My daughter and I were just hoping that that quote will appear soon, preferably spoken in Petty's slow, deep, not quite deep south FL drawl. He's a favorite of mine, but he only got that way after I'd seen him live. He is a phenomenal performer. All good thoughts sent out that he will pull through this.

Oh no. I'd seen some things back when Gary Shandling passed, about how Tom Petty & he had developed an unlikely, close friendship back when he appeared on Shandling's old show. And now they're both gone. Tough to hear.

Seriously - you could not hear

Guess you have just been been to one of he's shows. Laugh and sing to songs that you forgot you knew.

Give it a go. recit.

i didn't mean that i didn't know of or enjoy any of his music. just more along the lines of what grandpa said. i wasn't as familiar and attached to his music as some others might be.

Thanks Dana. I've been busy with hospitalizing my wife today and am not on the pulse of anything. I guess I really meant that, if any artist I like dies, then I don't want to know. That includes Big Daddy King. 'Blissfully unaware' seems like it should be my calling from here on in. Every time I read the news it skews my zeitgeist. I want to be sheltered from the seemingly constant storm.

Hoping for a speedy recovery.

I listened to Tom Petty all the way on my drive in this morning and reminisced about one of the greatest days of my life. They gave one of the best performances at Live Aid. I was there with a date... the proverbial one that got away. Petty really got the crowd involved in the music. I sang screamed my lungs out. A screen shot from the video above with guess who in the pic. :) I don’t recall the red balloon, though.

I thought one of the songs I heard this morning could fit nicely for the opening of the next ‘It’ installment with the adult losers.

So much good music over many years.

I did not like the obituary that was written by cnn. I found it patronizing and somewhat disparaging. A legendary musician just died and they make a point of saying he had a nasal voice.
But he did! That's not a bad thing! It's one of the things that was so unique about him. I've loved his music since I first heard American Girl in 1977 and it's one of the first things everyone was saying about him. It was part of his signature style.

All the artists i grew up with are dying the past 2 years, Bowie, Prince, Cornell, pretty soon we'll have to make do with the realitystars, the Youtubebloggers and Justin Biebers...

My children think real stars are teenagers with a channel on Youtube or people with no skills who are followed by camera's all day.
Makes me feel old..

Too bad i never saw him perform. In 2012 he was in the Netherlands and Eddie Vedder walked on stage for a song, really sorry i misse that...
