Saddest thing I ever saw .... I've not forgot it to this day .... when I was a college one day ... there was a huge plate glass window in dining area. A cedar waxwing flew into it and died. I ran out to see if the bird was just stunned, but no, and I had never seen one before ... so beautiful ! So sad....

One of my most pleasurable experiences ever was standing in an area near a creek on a property we own, in the midst of some nectar producing plants. About a half dozen hummingbirds where flying all around me -- and hovering within a foot from my face. I just stood there motionless for almost 15 minutes in awe. It as almost mystical.

You're welcome. I love birds too. My feeder is just outside my kitchen window that is over the sink. It almost makes doing dishes a pleasure....LOL

We have had a pair of cardinals living in our hedges for years. They always welcome us home. We also regularly see mourning doves, crows, turkeys, woodpeckers and hawks. In summertime the occasional hummingbird and of course good old fashioned robins! Two years straight the woodpeckers took up temporary residence in one of my Halloween decorations (the headless horseman's horse)!

Hi Chris - I love birds, too.

My husband took down the apple tree in our back yard as it was dying, but before he did that we had a feeder on there for years. I love the sounds the birds make and watching them.

Maybe I could hook up some kind of feeder to the shed in the back yard. It's probably high enough off the ground that birds would come to it.
I think they need to be about four or five feet off the ground for the birds to feel safe.

This one is one of my faves! The first time Andy saw a North American robin he said - Oh right, of course - everything is bigger in Canada! (He still calls the USA "America" too). :welcoming:

This is what he had seen previously in Scotland so quite a size difference

Mourning Dove. A flock of these guys descends on our side yard each afternoon to pick up the bigger seed the finches, sparrows, chickadees, et. al. toss from the bird feeders (I guess they like the seed I bought this year--lol)View attachment 862
Morning Dove- always in the fields.

These are my Mother's favorite. I always thought there was something a little sad about them. Maybe that soft cooing they do?

Yep. They're well named. This is the first year that I've seen a lot of them, especially in our yard. Definitely need to make the trip to the farm supply for bird seed again (apparently they like it better than the Wally World stuff--lol

I love those sturdy robins! We have them already--a little early, but we've had a mild winter so far. They're busy, cheerful little birds--and not so little here, sometimes!

(Well this is a SK website, and in his world of writing, not everything is sunshine and lollipops.)

My bad bird experience… The other year during our annual 4th of July picnic a bolt of lighting struck a birch tree about 20 yards from where many of us were gathered. The lightning shot out of the base of the tree along a root and headed straight for us (probably because our well was between the tree and us). Before hitting the well it diverted into the house when it came to the underground wires and blew up our dishwasher, a TV and a chandelier. A birdhouse was on the birch tree and it literally exploded. The baby bird carnage was not a pretty sight.

Relax, Pic is not as bad as you'd think.
