No - I would if I did not take my Pantoloc for GERD - severe acid reflux disease

Have you ever been at risk of death, and if so, did it change you?
Almost died from an ectopic pregnancy once - it ruptured and I lost one fallopian tube (but it did not change me)

I guess the Bible - it has a lot of good stories in it :facepalm_smiley:

The teacher in 11/22/63 - Jake - no reason - I just liked him!

I wanted to get buy-in before announcing next week's survey architect:

Next Sunday features Sundrop and thank you for agreeing, Sunnie!

NOTE: Oops, I apologize. Your question is character, not characters. Damn.

Interesting reading, blunty! And hey, no apologies. It's not like a pass-fail test.

What is your most dreaded consequence of getting older? (Yes, I'm projecting, fine.)
Alzheimer's - my father had it
Have you changed your mind on any foundational principal beliefs since you were a kid? If so, which one(s)? (Only if you're comfortable saying)
Almost all of them.....

I hear all that five by five.

And I guess I can answer my own survey.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Are you double-jointed anywhere, to any extent? If so, what?

Not really. My thumbs used to sorta be, and in doing back-neck arches as part of wrestling exercises, I could keep pushing till my nose touched the mat, but no more.

Toilet paper - over or under?

Over.

What is your most dreaded consequence of getting older? (Yes, I'm projecting, fine.)

Incapacity and being a burden to others.

Have you excelled at any sport? If so, which one(s)?

I was solidly middle-class on almost all sports, i.e., good enough to excel in PE, not good enough to be varsity. I did hold a sprinting record for my grade school, and I was a great shot in the Marines.

Have you changed your mind on any foundational principal beliefs since you were a kid? If so, which one(s)? (Only if you're comfortable saying)

Lots of them, but the major one is probably losing my religion. I meet it every now and then, and we're on good speaking terms, but I don't miss it.

How do you dry your clothes?

Dryer for me, but if I was honest, I'd say "Grandma." I'm fully capable, but she does 98% of the laundry.

Do you physically hurt from anything right now?

Yup, various places head to feet. You pay your dues to get old.

Have you ever been at risk of death, and if so, did it change you?

Yes and yes. A revelation when climbing that made me decide not to be that extreme again, and a heart attack that put me on medication and somewhat changed life habits to lower the risk in the future.

You have one book to suggest that I read. What is it?

I asked this question without identifying with it. Hm. I'd also go with To Kill A Mockingbird, simply because it had the biggest wrenching reaction from me of any book ever.

What is your favorite character, good or bad, in the SK books you've read? And why?

John Smith. Well-meaning, handled his victimization well, and had the fortitude to do what was needed.

Are you double-jointed anywhere, to any extent? If so, what? Not double joined, my joints just hurt...lol

Toilet paper - over or under? Over.

What is your most dreaded consequence of getting older? (Yes, I'm projecting, fine.) Being a burden to my son, so I'm making sure I'm not going to be.

Have you excelled at any sport? If so, which one(s)? I was an expert Nintendo TECMO Bowl player. Recognize...

Have you changed your mind on any foundational principal beliefs since you were a kid? If so, which one(s)? (Only if you're comfortable saying) Religion. Believed in it as a kid, no use for it at all as an adult.

How do you dry your clothes? Electric dryer.

Do you physically hurt from anything right now? Right knee, old injury that seems to be coming back to say "hi" more and more often.

Have you ever been at risk of death, and if so, did it change you? Yes, too young and stupid to be changed by it until twenty years down the road.

You have one book to suggest that I read. What is it? The Dark Tower series.

And... in previous surveys, you've been asked about favorite SK stories and what character you identify with. But....
What is your favorite character, good or bad, in the SK books you've read? And why? Roland Deschain. His dedication to cause, shooting skills, and overall intuition.

Are you double-jointed anywhere, to any extent? If so, what?
My left thumb. In bending it back, I can almost touch my first knuckle.

Toilet paper - over or under?
Over. Under is for heathens ;)

What is your most dreaded consequence of getting older? (Yes, I'm projecting, fine.)
Losing the ability to think and reason. Lord, that's scary.

Have you excelled at any sport? If so, which one(s)?
Rowing.

Have you changed your mind on any foundational principal beliefs since you were a kid? If so, which one(s)? (Only if you're comfortable saying)
Hell, yes. Kids are so black and white in their thinking, and maybe we inculcate that to make them part of whatever 'tribe' we occupy. The ability to see shades of gray came later in life.

How do you dry your clothes?
Some in the dryer, some hung up. When I get my actual clothesline back (I foolishly had The Man take down our clothesline years ago) this spring, I'll probably hang dry just about everything.

Do you physically hurt from anything right now?
Yup. Left ankle still hasn't healed, right knee was twisted in the fall as well, and my back nearly always hurts at some level (herniated disc). It's hell getting old (lol)

Have you ever been at risk of death, and if so, did it change you?
Aside from self-caused, not really. If you count that, absolutely. I learned to keep closer watch on how meds effect me, and to keep lines of communication open.

You have one book to suggest that I read. What is it?
Lonesome Dove (since you've already read The Stand). I don't even like westerns, and I killed three PB copies of that one through use before I finally got a HB copy.

And... in previous surveys, you've been asked about favorite SK stories and what character you identify with. But....
What is your favorite character, good or bad, in the SK books you've read? And why?
Mike Anderson (Storm of the Century) is probably my favorite character (aside from Stu Redman, who I've already used as as my 'identify'). He's a good (if imperfect) man in a horrible situation, who makes a terribly hard choice. I'd like to have his strength of character.

Are you double-jointed anywhere, to any extent? If so, what? Nope.

Toilet paper - over or under? Over, always over.

What is your most dreaded consequence of getting older? (Yes, I'm projecting, fine.) Alzheimer's/dementia. There is a history of it in my family. Such a waste.

Have you excelled at any sport? If so, which one(s)? Nope. See last week's survey. Me = total klutz.

Have you changed your mind on any foundational principal beliefs since you were a kid? If so, which one(s)? (Only if you're comfortable saying) My beliefs have evolved, but the core concept is still the same.

How do you dry your clothes? Dryer unless they must lay flat to dry.

Do you physically hurt from anything right now? Yes, I have done something to my shoulder that I keep ignoring hoping it will get better. After a year, I'm thinking it's not going to.

Have you ever been at risk of death, and if so, did it change you? Yes, complications after a surgery. Not really.

You have one book to suggest that I read. What is it? Watership Down.

And... in previous surveys, you've been asked about favorite SK stories and what character you identify with. But....
What is your favorite character, good or bad, in the SK books you've read? And why? Wolf from the Talisman. Just a good and loyal friend. No one could ever hope for more.

Nice job, Grandpa.

Are you double-jointed anywhere, to any extent? If so, what? My elbows, fingers

Toilet paper - over or under? over

What is your most dreaded consequence of getting older? (Yes, I'm projecting, fine.) My memory, stamina, flexibility, energy, pot belly

Have you excelled at any sport? If so, which one(s)? No. Although I have golfed and bowled in my day. Lowest golf score, probably 100. Highest bowling score: 249..

Have you changed your mind on any foundational principal beliefs since you were a kid? If so, which one(s)? (Only if you're comfortable saying) not really . I do pride myself on as I know better, I do better. So I am always learning and changing opinions as I learn. But the core beliefs? No.

How do you dry your clothes? Dryer and I do have a clothesline. I installed it this summer when I had to unplug my dryer for a few weeks to plug in one of those huge drying machines to try to dry out my floors from the bottom up due to a water flooding situation. I will use the clothesline more this summer.

Do you physically hurt from anything right now? My back gives me the most trouble.

Have you ever been at risk of death, and if so, did it change you? Well, not being cute here. But I was at risk of death after my mom died. It was a very precarious time for me.

You have one book to suggest that I read. What is it? A simple child book that I loved with a great message: Harriet the Spy. An adult book: Arguably Essays by Christopher Hitchens.

And... in previous surveys, you've been asked about favorite SK stories and what character you identify with. But....
What is your favorite character, good or bad, in the SK books you've read? And why? Too hard! So many for a variety of different reasons. I would have to say Wolf from the Talisman. He loved with every part of him. Life was pretty cut and dry. Treat others the way you want to be treated. And keep your herd safe.

Are you double-jointed anywhere, to any extent? If so, what? My hips. Don't ask.

Toilet paper - over or under? Neither. I put the roll on the tank and grab it when I need it.

What is your most dreaded consequence of getting older? Pain. I don't mind gray hair or wrinkles on my face as much as all the things that hurt.

Have you excelled at any sport? If so, which one(s)? I played soccer (footie) in my younger days.

Have you changed your mind on any foundational principal beliefs since you were a kid? If so, which one(s)? Many times. Shoved through the Catechism as a child, I've since embraced broader views, including naturalism, holistic healing, even an allowance for (if not participation) in things like (emotional) vampirism, witchcraft, voodoo, and more. Basically, I know that there are more things going on than my meager little brain can fully comprehend.

How do you dry your clothes? I love the smell of sheets dried in the wind. Everything else gets baked in a dryer.

Do you physically hurt from anything right now? My poor belly is still getting over a bug. Guuuuuh.

Have you ever been at risk of death, and if so, did it change you? I came into the world after only 6 months gestating, barely 2 pounds. In 1963, decades before the premie neonatal care breakthroughs we have now. Back then, they put you in an incubator. If you lived, so be it. I'm told that I fought hard for every breath. I can only imagine it's made me a strong person.

You have one book to suggest that I read. What is it? I suggest Richard Bach's Illusions to anybody. It's a delightful alternative way to look at messiahs.

And... in previous surveys, you've been asked about favorite SK stories and what character you identify with. But....
What is your favorite character, good or bad, in the SK books you've read? And why
? In many ways, Cujo. That dog was neither good nor evil. It had no intentions either way. He simply reacted to what was happening to him. It's a frank, honest look at a character without a lot of psychological hanky-panky.

Yes, I have done something to my shoulder that I keep ignoring hoping it will get better. After a year, I'm thinking it's not going to.
That happened to me too. An athlete friend gave me a quick orthopedic test where I applied pressure with my arm in different directions, one of which didn't work, and he said it was a rotator cuff. It took me about two years to get over it. I did things that wouldn't stress the painful positions and worked on light weights, many reps, involving the shoulder in lifting planes that didn't hurt.

But you should get it looked at. Another friend of mine just kept getting worse and ended up with surgery, both shoulders. Miserable time for him.

I had a rotator cuff injury that took a little over a year before I had ALMOST full range of motion. Hurt like a son of a beeotch!

Are you double-jointed anywhere, to any extent? If so, what?
No

Toilet paper - over or under?
Over or under? afraid i don't get it.

What is your most dreaded consequence of getting older? (Yes, I'm projecting, fine.)
Not being able to read, not being able to clean myself without help

Have you excelled at any sport? If so, which one(s)?
I was a great Soccer goalie once. Mainly perhaps because i was dumb enough not to care about throwing myself face forward down on the gravel fields we played on in front of an oncoming attackers feet. It hurt!

Have you changed your mind on any foundational principal beliefs since you were a kid? If so, which one(s)? (Only if you're comfortable saying)
Not sure. Did i have any foundational beliefs as a kid? Don't think i made any major changes.

How do you dry your clothes?
In a drying closet. You hang them in there and warm or cool air is swoshed down on them during a period of 1-6 hours.

Do you physically hurt from anything right now?
No, The knees hurt sometimes and so does my back but right now i'm fine.

Have you ever been at risk of death, and if so, did it change you?
We almost had a collision with a big moose once. Luckily, for both the moose and us, my father just managed to to turn into a sideroad. But i was to young to be affected. just excited.

You have one book to suggest that I read. What is it?
Watership Down by Richard Adams

And... in previous surveys, you've been asked about favorite SK stories and what character you identify with. But....
What is your favorite character, good or bad, in the SK books you've read? And why?
I choose my fave story, IT, and Bill Denbrough. Because he is a rather reluctant leader. He is always asking himself why the others look to him to say what to do but he accepts the responsibility and leads not through force or threats but through personality and reason. Also because he is a writer.

Are you double-jointed anywhere, to any extent? If so, what? No.

Toilet paper - over or under? Under.

What is your most dreaded consequence of getting older? So far, it's getting gray hair.

Have you excelled at any sport? If so, which one(s)? In high school, I ran a 5 minute mile my freshman year and my coaches thought I would be a star. I didn't improve much beyond that. I later found out it was because my flexibility was really bad.

Have you changed your mind on any foundational principal beliefs since you were a kid? If so, which one(s)? My family was politically very conservative. I changed in the 90s when I felt republicans were hostile to under served people and I never looked back.

How do you dry your clothes? Machine.

Do you physically hurt from anything right now? Minor back pain, but nothing serious.

Have you ever been at risk of death, and if so, did it change you? No.

You have one book to suggest that I read. What is it? John Adams by David McCullough. It's a great history of the founding fathers based on first hand accounts.

And... in previous surveys, you've been asked about favorite SK stories and what character you identify with. But....
What is your favorite character, good or bad, in the SK books you've read? And why? Sadie Dunhill from 11/22/63. She seemed like a nice person with a strong heart.
