Well, for one thing, they were written for a "tween" readership. I'm not finding them boring - they're charming in their own way. Maybe you're not into reading books that were intended for 12-year-olds. (I'm not really, either, but I am working on a Young Adult piece at the moment and wanted some inspiration.)
I can, and do, read books intended for way younger than that and appreciate it. Have done it many times before. I still think the first three were hailed to the skyes without actually being that good. Personally i think young adult is a misnomer. But i like a good story and i don't think the first three HP-books provide that.

Finished The Mourning Bells by Trent and I am trying to read The Border.
Maybe too fantastical??
Open to any thoughts?:upside:
I think I know what you mean in your spoiler. I'm just not 'feeling it' with this book. I've even had to re-read sentences here and there because McCammon's not using his usual diction here. I'm about halfway thru now.

Cannery Row - John Steinbeck

I read it a couple of eons ago and just found my old paperback and decided to read it again. This paperback is from the seventies with yellow pages, small print and a funky smell. I noticed on the inside cover there is a stamp from where I bought this book. I bought it in 1979 at a used book store in Colorado called The Book Exchange. So, just for kicks I googled the store and found out that it's still there! The store has the same phone number as the one stamped in my book but the address is a few doors down from where it was but in the same shopping center.
Read this one a few months ago when I was on my Steinbeck kick. I really do love his books! I have Travels With Charley in my TBR pile but I'm saving it 'forspecial'. There's only a few Steinbeck books that I haven't read as of yet and Travels is one of them so it has to be read at a special time- when all the stars are alined, the usual strife around the world is at a minimum and there's no new King book looming on the horizon. ;;D

The woods are lovely dark and deep
I found the whole series in one e-book on Amazon for $9.99 do you think this is a good deal?
While waiting to go to the library to pick up my reserved books, I started The Flood the first in this series and my imagination was double tweaked within the first couple of sentences. Geeminee, its either feast or famine!

skimom2 How was that Oregon Trail book? Just stumbled across it, browsing on Amazon. Sounds very interesting. I grew up right alongside part of the Trail. Is it good? Worth a look?

I finished up A Light in the Window, the 2nd Mitford book over the weekend. Now I am reading To Fetch a Thief, the 3rd Chet and Bernie book. :)

I started The Martian by Andy Weir. I guess I am late to the party on this one as I see it will be a movie later this year. Still, I am going to forget the hype and just enjoy this one. So far, so good: an easy but intelligent writing style and an interesting plot. Hope it holds up.

Please let me know what you think of that one when you finish! It's in my TBR pile.

I'm just getting ready to start it. Might have more than the library week, though--I think my daughter splashed tea on one end of the pages *sigh*. I hope it's worth whatever she's going to have to work off ;)

Are you liking the Mitford books? They always make me smile.

Michael McDowell is an amazing author. I hope you'll be excited enough after you finish the Blackwater books to keep reading the rest of his novels.

Let me know what you think! I got to buy a library book for that same reason a while back! ;-D

I am very much enjoying the Mitford books! Have 3 and 4 on their way to me right now from thriftbooks. :) I laugh out loud, smile, it is just a really nice town to be a part of, while I am turning the pages. Thank you again for recommending them to me!

Oh, and I just know my Grandma would have loved these books, too. She might have read them, I don't know for sure, though. But, I feel like I am sharing them with her now, and what a nice feeling that is. :)

The other day I finished Black Sheep, by Susan Hill. What a bleak rendering of life in a mining town where generations grind through a hellish existence. About two thirds of the way through some light broke through and I had hope for something positive, but that was dashed by yet another tragedy. It may sound like I didn't like the book, but I did. I'm only glad it was less than 150 pages.
