The Darkside of the Moon (England really)
The Island Of Dr. Moreau - H.G. Wells

After seeing the documentary, Lost Soul... about the making of the Dr. Moreau movie, I decided to read the novel. I've read a few of Wells novels and liked them and have always intended to read a few more. When I first got a kindle a few years ago, I downloaded several free Wells books. When I went to look for Dr. Moreau on my kindle, I noticed that all but one of the Wells novels I downloaded were gone. There must have been some public domain/copyright issue. I'm not complaining because I didn't pay anything for them and the free public domain stuff is usually riddled with errors anyway. So I went to Amazon to buy a copy and I found what looks to be a very nice inexpensive kindle omnibus of 5 Wells novels, Moreau, Time Machine, War Of The Worlds, Invisible Man & First Men In The Moon. The book is called Five Great Science Fiction Novels. On the purchase page was this claim:

Beautifully designed and carefully proofed for digital publication, this edition includes:
• 10 unique illustrations relevant to its content;
• Table of Contents with Quick Navigation;

I haven't read anything yet but I have scanned through the book and the claims seem to be valid. So if you are an HG Wells fan, this looks to be a nice edition to get without all of the errors and it only costs $2.99.
I have the actual book of that collection, I also got it dirt cheap on amazon when I was looking for a copy of war of the worlds, the omnibus was cheaper than any single copy I could find.

I'm still reading salems lot, it's taken me a while and I haven't been reading every day, plus I had some nasty readers block earlier in the read. I found the first half to be quite slow going, only speeding up in small bits, but now I'm 300 pages in and it's in full swing now.

Is it just me or did anyone else notice the seeds of IT been planted in stephen's head during salems lot?

'Doug Masters' just has to be a non-de-plume! It's just too cute.

Starting Inspector of the Dead today. I'm also reading Alice Waters' lovely The Art of Simple Food, and I need to pick up the second Laini Taylor book in the Daughter of Smoke and Bone series--I've lost the title of that book somewhere in my cobwebby brain for the nonce. Thoroughly enjoyed the first one! Extremely well-written fantasy with seraphim, 'demons', alternate worlds... Taylor has a way with words and phrasing that is just beyond any other YA author I've read (in fact, I think this was marketed as YA because that was hot a few years ago. This is not strictly a kids' series).

Finished When the Balls Drop by Brad Garrett, a bit raw, used the eff word too often for me, but had some funny spots. Almost finished The Ice Twins by Tremayne, it got off slowly but has really picked up and getting mighty creepy. A daytime read for me. The library is holding The Third Wife .
I reviewed The Third Wife for NYJB. :) It's a pretty good book! This is one where the epilogue was definitely needed--without it, my estimation of one character arc would be a lot lower. The story kept me interested and absorbed, and I enjoyed a slower reveal than one generally sees in recent books.

I'm posting this on a couple of threads (so you know you're not seeing double :D): For anyone who has been wanting to read Gabaldon's Outlander series, Amazon has the first 7 books bundled for kindle for $1.99. I think it's today only. :) The Outlander Series 7-Book Bundle: Outlander, Dragonfly in Amber, Voyager, Drums of Autumn, The Fiery Cross, A Breath of Snow and Ashes, An Echo in the Bone, Diana Gabaldon - Amazon.com
Wow, that's fantastic! (I need to get myself a Kindle... :biggrin2: )

or kindle for PC/Mac :) That's what I used before I bought an actual reader. It's a free download for your computer. Then, if you ever do get a reader, the books will be in your kindle cloud and you can load them on the reader :)
I tried downloading this once and seemed to sort it, then ran into problems because I don't own a credit card, I do have a debit card now though... so will try to find the program on my laptop. Thanks for the reminder... I had forgotten this existed! :blush:

Currently reading a very interesting book called "The Complete Jack the Ripper" by a guy named Donald Rumbelow. I like it that his book doesn't so much try to figure out who Jack the Ripper was but puts forth information from police reports and witness accounts without trying to spin the story itself. A good read so far, about half way thru.

How weird! When I downloaded Kindle for PC it didn't need any info/card--just a simple download. I hope you can sort it!

'Bout all I can do to finish reading anything lately...have a piles of estimates waiting to get done but can't do them 'til i get prices on winders. Sally in the garden, sifting cinders, lifted up her leg and...you know the rest. anyway, Stephen Gane sent, or had sent to me, his new story, Coming Out...I knew he was working on something based on the info at his website. Read his second in the Liston Pearce series, Consumed By Fire a time back and he hasn't been around much but I'm not here during the day so maybe he's still coming by. The seeds for this one, Coming Out, were sown in the previous story...I think...a young boy, witness to deeds done by others, is called in to the police station...the nick...as they say. There's this description on the back of the paperback, "a young boy dreams of becoming a police detective whilst also coming to terms with his mixed race background and his homosexuality." Relatively short...so call it what you want...I'll call it a story. 85 pages. Some of his stories...looks like some are free at Amazon, Smashwords, Barnes and Nobel, iTunes. Looks like you could sign up for a newsletter and get a free copy of the second. Now I need to go water the garden. Over and out.
