Read a couple of Xanth books. I prefer his Incarnations of Immortality series. Have not read the Asprin books. I read the first in the Amber series. Don't know why I stopped. Maybe I'll revisit it. :)
I too have read the Incarnations of Immortality books, but it was so long ago I may wind up doing a reread soon. Thanks for the "reminder!"

Do you like British humour? If so, head for the Discworld! Terry Pratchett (rest him) wrote dozens of Discworld books. That ought to keep you busy :)

I've always wanted to read this series. I even have some of the books but for some reason or another I havn't read them. I think every time I think about reading them, SK releases a new book so it's his fault I havn't read them lol.

Tery, have you read/ do you like the Xanth books (Piers Anthony) or Myth books (Robert Asprin)? I loved those series. Oh, and Zelazny's Amber series. Now I want to go read some old school fantasy.

ohmygosh, I've read all those series :) The Amber series is my favorite. I was on a Piers Anthony kick for a while. I've read The Apprentice Adept series (my favorite), The Tarot series, The Cluster series, and some of the Zanth series.

I'm not Tery, but I've read about the first 20 of the Xanth books in order (I see there are 41). I'd say the first 3 are quite good, the next 7 good and the next 10 were OK and VERY formulaic. The puns get old after 10 or so books but I loved reading Anthony's end notes because he always gave a shout out out fans who sent in puns, names, etc. that he used in that particular book.

You did good to get through the first 20 Zanth books :) I only got through Golem in the Gears before I was afraid I'd lose my mind if I read another silly pun lol.

I tried reading the first book in the Incarnations of Imortality series but got confused :( Zanth may have caused some brain damage lol.

The woods are lovely dark and deep
I am reading Fellside by M.R. Carey, Disappearance at Devil's Rock by Paul Tremblay and Call the Midwife, Book 2: Shadows of the Workhouse. I am enjoying all three, they are very different, although two books appear to have ghosts as main characters!:icon_eek:
Just finished all three mentioned above and highly recommend them to all!

The library is holding James Patterson's new Alex Cross for me but it is done in a shortened version, some new gimmick he's trying, he calls them BookShots. The story is told in 150 pages. I don't do abridged versions and I just might let my reservation lapse. BooHiss .

I've started back my old habit of reading several things at once, so it's hard for me to finish a single book in a relatively short period. I'm in the middle of:

Finders Keepers
(re-reading) The Lord of the Rings
Clive Barker's Abarat series (finished book 1)
(re-reading) Edgar Allan Poe complete collection
HP Lovecraft complete collection

Honestly, if I became an overnight billionaire, I would retire to my own island and just read. You'd all be invited over, of course. Bring snacks.
What are you going to read in 4 years time, when you've finished that lot? ;)

Going to read Needful Things tonight. I wrote out all Stephen King's works on small slips of paper and put them in a plastic container and mix them up and pick one out at random and that's what I read and don't replace that slip that way I don't have decide what to read.
What a novel idea. Pun intended.

Are you reading it for the first time? I read it a million years ago and I loved it and I was thinking about reading it again but I was afraid the magic might be gone after all this time y'know?
Probably one of the best sci-fi series ever written. Read them after watching the film. Honestly think I would have struggled to remember all the characters if not. I've got some of the follow up ones his son did, but haven't got round to reading them yet. Watched the later tv series recently, and can honestly say I preferred the film.

Great choices!! Shawshank Redemption came to my mind. Maybe a book of Mr. King's short stories, as most times they are a mix. and have an appeal to most all tastes would be a good suggestion. I am just thinking if someone were to ask me to recommend a good read but was not a horror fan maybe that would be the way to go. Hmmmmmmmmmmm.

Still think you made a new fan with your suggestions!!!
I fitted a kitchen for my ex high school English teacher, and was so proud to tell her of my obsession with reading. I bought her a copy of Different Seasons, and she did the whole 'I don't like horror stories ' talk. This isn't horror, please please read it'. Last time I saw her she hadn't read it yet. Maybe next time I see her she will have.

Finished the Fireman just now. I was more moved by the last bit in the Acknowledgements than I was by anything in the book itself.
Yes!!! Completely agree.
Edit: Wait. I think we may be talking about two different things.

I was talking about the coda to the book buried in the copyright section.

I've been in a reading slump for a few years now. I'm pretty sure it's mainly down to my obsession with social media. I'm sure I'm not the only one. I always read in my half hour lunch break, also when I get a bath (not in my lunch break Scott), but I tend to do my surfing first (insert pic of someone surfing in the bath here Scott) . Many a time there's no time left for actually reading. I collect books, and for a while now my 'to read' pile has been becoming a 'to read' bookcase

The coda was a nice bonus, but I was mainly speaking of when he remembered his friend who died of lung cancer (the last of the ackowledgements). Those sentences made me cry for some reason.

I finished End of Watch. Thoroughly enjoyed it and give the trilogy a solid B+. As for the ending...

I think it was perfect. SK could have gone in so many directions and he chose the one that put a real ending on this story. (I was afraid he was going to have Brady jump into Holly and then force Bill to kill her in order to kill Brady.) I for one like that this particular 3-part story is ended. Whether he picks up with Pete and Holly is to be seen, but Brady is done.
