In first grade my response was a zookeeper or policeman. I split the difference and became a librarian, ha.

When I was in high school I took a course that supposedly would help us decide what jobs we would be good at. We did all kinds of tests, including IQ tests, fine motor tests, etc.

In the end, the two jobs suggested for me were Librarian and Legal Secretary. (My motto is "a place for everything and everything in it's place".)

Since I only planned to work until having kids, I went for secretary. (Only one person ever made the mistake of referring to me as "just a secretary".)

As an adult I actually looked into what courses I would need to get hired by the city as a librarian. Was willing to do that, but they don't hire often and only part time. In a school I would also have to be licensed as a teacher.

Let's see.....

First, I wanted to be an archeologist. Yeah, I wanted to be Indiana Jones!

Then, it was marine biologist. Yeah, I wanted to be Matt Hooper!

Then I realized that neither pay well and require way too much studying!

Next was rockstar! Little far fetched but what the heck? I could play guitar. Just didn't have the connections or luck to get beyond the local scene. That's OK, I still enjoy playing!

Briefly considered law enforcement. SwiftDad was a cop. Took the exams. Did well. Then realized the risk / reward just wasn't high enough for me. Plus, I don't have the patience for it. I could just see myself getting in all types of trouble for whacking uncooperative civilians upside the head with my baton if they didn't do what I asked them to. So that was out.

I ended doing something I never pictured. Business Professional. Technically, I could be considered a Yuppie. If you're into labels and all. Which is totally uncool :)

Seriously, though I manage projects for a living. It's cool. I get to tell people what to do! Sometimes, they even actually do it!

I always wanted to be an actor. I did some acting in high school plays but was not very good at it so I gave up on that.

I had a fascination with store windows as a child. I even ran out of a restaurant where I was having lunch with my mother and brother and into the furniture store next door and sat on the couch in the window. They couldn't find me for a while but when they did, oh boy did I get it. I must have been about 5 or 6. Funny thing is that I wound up doing window displays for retail stores for a while in my 20s.

I always loved books and reading so I wanted to be a writer for a while too. I vividly remember coming home from first grade one day and proudly showing my mother my list of spelling words and saying something like, "Look at this story I wrote!" I write for a living now; not as an author but as a copywriter.

Around 5 years of age to about 7, I liked watching 'Lost in Space' so I wanted to be like a Astronaut. Also my first vivid remembrance of television was watching them land on the moon. I also like to watch Cowboy/Western movies so maybe a cowboy.
From 7 to about 12 I wanted to play Rugby League for the Roosters.
From 12 to about 16 a tennis player.

Astronaut. Hands down. I was (and still kind of am) in love with space and the idea of infinity, other planets and what they look like, other galaxies, solar system, exo-plants and the weird stuff out there and all the stuff we'll probably never know about.
Once I was encouraged to do so, I realized you had to be good at math. I dropped that idea like a hot potato but I hope in the afterlife space is part of the playground and we're free to explore as much as, and as far as, we wish.
I've been drawing since before I could walk and at one point I had high hopes of working for Walt Disney and used to pray to God I'd get a job working there, and I'm glad that prayer didn't turn out as I wanted because I hate working on computers. Now to be an animator, you have to be a computer whiz and drawing talent isn't as big of a part of the equation as it used to be. (When I first saw the Lion King I was transfixed by the idea that real lions were brought into the studio for the animators and artists to study and draw.) The old style animation process still holds my attention (not much does lol) and I loved anything to do with watching how these old classic animated movies were put together. The 3-D stuff is OK but you cannot beat some of the beautiful works of the old, classic Disney movies IMO.

Here, there and everywhere.
More serious job, I wanted to be a forensic pathologist and this was light years before all these CSI shows on TV. Nobody wanted anywhere near dead bodies.

I actually took an hours long career test when I was at university and by the time I got done, it told me I should be a Funeral Director.

DJ - I actually wanted to be a forensic pathologist also. I watched "Quincy" and was mesmerized. :D

Between the ages of 8-12, I wanted to be a forest ranger.

Paleontologist. That was when I was seemingly the only one in my grade who was interested in dinosaurs. I look at modern paleontology efforts and results, and I love what they've done with the place.

Astronaut.

At one point when i was in throwing distance of age 19 or 20, I looked up the requirements for being a trooper with the Illinois State Patrol. I wasn't quite tall enough at the time. I think my girlfriend at the time was relieved. (You know her as Grandma.)

If I had pursued the Law Enforcement path I could have been like Chief Brody! I was #3 on the hire list for Truro, MA. It's a little tiny town on Cape Cod. Dead all year except for the summer. Also, there was a Great White attack there a few years back. I would have been Officer SwiftDog with Chief Brody Dog :)
