I used to see all sorts of wildlife back at the homestead. The "every day" wildlife in the summer consisted of: ground squirrels, two species of bluejay, Orioles, Grosbeaks, doves, quail, cottontails, jackrabbits, Bull snakes, garden snakes, rattlesnakes, and of course mice and pack rats. (we lived on a farm, out in the middle of BFE. Seeing rodents every day was normal.)
But the critters we would see every so often were awesome. We used to have these tiny frogs everywhere. I'm talking as small as a woman's pinky fingernail. I've seen a bobcat out in the horse pasture, (we even kept a baby bobcat as a pet for a few months when I was small) and one year, when the fires in So Cal were particularly bad, we saw what had to have been a California Condor. We've had Chukar and Canadian Lynx pass through, and mountain lions and black or brown bears are common for that area. And while ki'yotes were common, we also had a wolf "problem" for a couple of years. (I have a story about that, but for another day.)
There were big herds of whitetail deer that used to swing through, and not far from our home you could find an even wider array of critters. Everything from chipmunks to horned toads to antelope.
I miss the diversity we had out there. Here in the city, you don't see much beyond the normal house sparrows...

Neighbor? What's a neighbor?
Someone who comes over for a beer and leaves a week later.

Are they good to eat?
Depends on the season. They are the most tasty after they have fattened up on YOUR summer BBQ.

Do you need a permit to hunt them? Or can you just shoot em, like me and my stepdaddy shot those beaver that one time?

Best check with your local Fish and Game. I don't want to give you any wrong information.

:D

A pair of mockingbirds built a nest in our backyard. Last week, we had two chirpy, little nestlings. This week, we have two fluffy fledgeling hopping around back there. And a pair of stressed out, cranky mockingbird parents. Every backyard excursion with the dogs has been rife with dive bombings, and yesterday I was attacked on my way in with the groceries.

These two are upset about Atticus Finch's portrayal in "Go Set a Watchman" as well.

I got 99 problems but a snail ain't one

I had slugs eating some flowers last week and tried the beer trick on them. About midnight or so that night I heard raucous laughter out in the yard and went out to investigate. Sure enough the slugs were sitting around the rim of the planter, shyt-faced, smoking cigarettes and telling dirty jokes. I'll post some of those over in the jokes thread later....

I am beginning to decide that you and I are very much alike. :)
