But do you like the smell of those pages? ;-D Seriously, that book in particular has the most amazing smell to it. I know, it sounds weird, but it just smells like 'class' to me. They don't make books like that now, at least not that you can buy in a Barnes and Nobles. Grant books is a wonderful publisher, but even their books they print now don't have the same feel/smell/charm like the ones they did back in the '80's.
There was a big discussion about the smell of books in one of the review books I read last week! One character had another gather a variety of books (HB, PB, old and new, good quality and not-so-good) and give them a smell test :) It really made me smile--nice to have others share your little weirdnesses.

Under the Dome Collector's edition just arrived! Still in the shrink wrap! Whoot!

I am fighting the urge to open it. lol

Open it! The shrink wrap can damage the book at times. It may not be archival quality and could actually stick to the dust jacket. Plus, you don't know if there is hidden damage to the book itself. Such things do happen.

Very true. Additionally, if it's a signed edition the tip sheet might be missing a signature. We had that come up just recently because someone did not open their copy of The Drawing of the Three (IIRC) when they bought it. Sometimes the sheets stick together when they're being signed and might end up being returned to the publisher unsigned and if no one along the way checks each one before being sent to the binder or when it's returned to them, you could get an unsigned copy. In this case we were able to verify the owner (who had recently died) of the copy and that the story given us was legit so Steve did sign it but it was many years after the book had been sent out. If whoever was supposed to sign the book died before the missing signature was discovered, the owner would be out of luck and that copy would not be as valuable to a collector.

My best friend of 40 years has always and will always smell a book by flipping through the pages before he begins reading. My other friends and I have ribbed him about this for years now. I think it's a charming, eccentric quality that is exhibited by genuinely exceptional people!

This happened to me with a book from Cemetary Dance. It was a signed limited King book and when it arrived I discovered that it was not signed. Had to send it back and then they sent me another one. I always take off any shrink wrap on my books. As John stated above, the plastic may actually damage the book over time. One can always purchase the larger sized plastic comic book covers and seal the book up that way. I've done it in the past myself and they work great!

I ordered Joe Hill's Gunpowder years ago. Signed numbered edition. When I got it, it was signed but not numbered. I still ahve it. Maybe I'll make it #1

See, that's tricky. Because the #1 probably went to Joe himself. Or maybe the illustrator? I have a Limited King book that is signed but not numbered also (which I knew when I bought it). It brings the value down on it but I know I can always sell it off if I need to and hopefully make a tiny profit.

Finally took your advice and cracked it open. Instantly put the dust jacket in a mylar cover protector. I did discover one minor imperfection. Possibly because of that little box of trading cards being wedged inside the top of the shrink wrap packaging. There is a minor bump to the top corner near the spine and crinkled edge on the decorative paper right near the top hinge. Not really a big deal to me though. I can't believe how massive this book sitting next to BCE.
