It's because there are already 12 variations of Samantha including one samantha, so no way to change your user name without the underscore unless you have some other extra letter or symbol with it.

I didn't realize there were so many variations of how to pronounce pasta! Of course it reflects on my New England heritage, but I say it pah sta. 
It's been coming out as "Sha-star" in my head.

My grandmother (she's not Canadian...) sometimes calls it Pass-ta, but most other people around here call it pah-sta.I didn't either until the Canadia coworker! I say it the same.
