In another thread I said I might break out a box of Hamburger Helper.
I cannot believe I even bought the stuff in the first place.
So here is what happened:
Browned the hamburger (lean ground beef) with onions, chopped fresh garlic, diced carrots and celery. Poured in some boiling water to help soften the veggies as they cooked.
Then I took the macaroni that came with the box, put it in a heat proof bowl and rehydrated that with boiling water.
Added a can of tomatoes to the stuff on the stove and continued to simmer.
After a while I realized I had not opened the 'sauce mix' so I poured that in to the bowl with the macaroni and boiling water (but first I put the macaroni and boiling water into the microwave for two minutes to cook it).
I drained the macaroni with the cheese sauce mix in it into a colander, separated the macaroni and after having a good look at it (and smelling it) decided to throw it down the toilet.
The leftover water with the 'cheese sauce' was iffy, so I took a sip of it - tasted like it had way too much salt so that went down the drain.
I ended up adding some whole wheat penne pasta (has more fibre and flavour) then added freshly ground pepper, chopped chives, parsley, basil and a few dashes of Frank's Red Hot hot sauce.
Now I am thinking - why did I even buy that box of Hamburger Helper anyway?
It was a waste of money, considering that I ended up throwing away most of the ingredients that came in the box.
Maybe it would have been better if they used higher quality pasta so that it doesn't end up mushy
