In another thread I said I might break out a box of Hamburger Helper.

I cannot believe I even bought the stuff in the first place.

So here is what happened:

Browned the hamburger (lean ground beef) with onions, chopped fresh garlic, diced carrots and celery. Poured in some boiling water to help soften the veggies as they cooked.

Then I took the macaroni that came with the box, put it in a heat proof bowl and rehydrated that with boiling water.

Added a can of tomatoes to the stuff on the stove and continued to simmer.

After a while I realized I had not opened the 'sauce mix' so I poured that in to the bowl with the macaroni and boiling water (but first I put the macaroni and boiling water into the microwave for two minutes to cook it).

I drained the macaroni with the cheese sauce mix in it into a colander, separated the macaroni and after having a good look at it (and smelling it) decided to throw it down the toilet.

The leftover water with the 'cheese sauce' was iffy, so I took a sip of it - tasted like it had way too much salt so that went down the drain.

I ended up adding some whole wheat penne pasta (has more fibre and flavour) then added freshly ground pepper, chopped chives, parsley, basil and a few dashes of Frank's Red Hot hot sauce.

Now I am thinking - why did I even buy that box of Hamburger Helper anyway?

It was a waste of money, considering that I ended up throwing away most of the ingredients that came in the box.

Maybe it would have been better if they used higher quality pasta so that it doesn't end up mushy :umm:

Neesy, as a former partaker of everything salty and fast at least when it came to food, I must chastise you a bit for doing what us men are famous for.

You have to go by the directions provided on the side of the box! If I recall you mix all that up, we had three children at home at one time so HH was occasionally a staple, then add noodles and let simmer for X amount of time. Then I think you leave the concoction covered, for again a set amount of time, which causes the whole mess to congeal into something 5-18 year olds can devour in less time than it took to prepare. Yes it is extremely salty and not at all good for arteries but teenagers don't really care about such things.

Now after scolding you for not going by the manufacturer's recipe for freeze dried death in a box, I am going to go peel an apple, reheat a lovely turkey burger and top it with raw spinach on wheat bread for lunch.

Could you Fed-Ex me that Hamburger Helper?

Just want to smell the box.

I still have one box left (I bought two). The second one is Three Cheese Manicotti

Yes - they must put something in there that causes it all to congeal. Glad I tossed out that part!

Mine turned out really delicious - I put some grated Parmigiana Reggiano on it

But really - after all the changes I made you cannot even call it HH anymore - mine tastes and smells better ;;D

In all seriousness after re-reading what you added/subtracted from the Hamburger Helper it does sound delicious. Made my mouth water just thinking about it.

Excuse me got to go snack on some unsalted peanuts.

I had a half a can of chunky chicken noodle soup, earlier today I had I a cup of Jell-O, and yesterday a cup of Jell-O. Really nothing substantial since Saturday when the flu kicked in. But I think I'm fighting it off, I hope so anyhow, weak, coughing, sneezing, dizzy.. could barely shovel any snow... I did get a flu shot about 3 weeks ago and they say that even if it doesn't prevent the flu it may help with mitigating the symptoms, which if I feel better tomorrow it certainly has done so.

I've got a headache so I'm cooking this tomorrow night, technically.

Fried salmon patties, baked sweet potatoes, steamed broccoli, and rice.

Here's what the last batch looked like:
I love salmon patties (tuna patties, too), but only make them once in a blue moon--The Man isn't fond of fish at the best of times. Yours look wonderful!

I sauteed up some onions bits. Added spices, wine, teriyaki, sliced mushrooms, and spinach.

Oh, and I reduced some bacon in the microwave.

Baked a potato in the microwave while I put the bacon in with the vegetables.

Took the potato out, split it, and slathered on the onion/mushroom/spinach/bacon stuff in the skillet. Sprinkled (slathered) some shredded cheddar. Back in the microwave to melt the cheese.

Immodestly, it was wonderful.
