Some people are saying that the lockdown has to continue until an effective treatment or vaccine for Coronavirus is developed. This is nonsense, science has never developed any sort of vaccine for this type of virus. Science, for over a decade has been wanting to get a vaccine for SARS, a decade later? No vaccine. Lockdowns are going to have to end, it's a fact, regardless of wheather or not their is a vaccine.
Actually, there's some promising news of a vaccine coming from Oxford University that's been reported in the last couple of days.

In Race for a Coronavirus Vaccine, an Oxford Group Leaps Ahead

It will still be a while before any vaccine makes it to the general public but given the circumstances, I could see that they might try to speed up the process.

....I read this article yesterday and am a bit heartened....just because something hasn't worked against one disease, does not mean it can't be tweaked to attack another.....

My partner and I have already discussed what we'll do when I first get home. Maine requires that I self-quarantine for 2 weeks so knew I'd have to stay home anyway but he has increased risk factors so have to be extra cautious. His text to me was along the lines of "So what are we going to do so that you don't kill me?" Hmmmm.....other than you not making any more remarks like that, you mean? We've got a plan in place so should be fine. Not exactly the welcome home I'd anticipated last January when I left, though.

I know it's for the best, but dammit, man....... No Highland Games this year

From our local paper:
"It is with deepest regret that I must inform you that the Board of Trustees has taken a unanimous vote to cancel the 2020 Grandfather Mountain Highland Games. This was to have been our 65th anniversary, and it is difficult to find words to adequately express my sadness and disappointment at this outcome," an open letter from GMHG President Steve Quillin opened. "As you can no doubt appreciate, this was an agonizing decision, and one that was informed by the best information we could gather from health and government resources. We waited as late in the year as we could before making this difficult call, putting forth every effort we could to try and hold the games, but the provisions contained in the April 23, 2020, statement from the N.C. governor's office will make it impossible to even set up for the event."

According to the letter, the decision "was driven by several factors, but primarily we could not gain any reasonable guarantee that we would be permitted to gather in a group of more than 50, nor that it would be safe to do so in July of this year given that we still have limited testing and no vaccines."

The thing about vaccines is that in some cases the accines side effects can be worse than the disease it is attempting to cure. And most of the time these side effects don't manifest themselves immediately, hence why there is such a long testing period. There was talk of a cure for the common cold at St Andrews University, nothing materialised.

I have a friend who works for an oil company, he's currently stuck in the Ukraine, he was meant to be getting a flight to Warsaw, and from Warsaw to Heathrow then home, but that didn't happen. In Ukraine they have grounded all flights, you get hit with a fine if you don't have a good reason for being out. Then again, things could have been worse, he was supposed to go to Israel a week later, and things are much worse there.

Vaccines and most other drugs for that matter. Or, that they can be fine for one group but not another. All reasons why the testing process takes so long and why it makes so much sense not to rush things but hopefully they'll be able to do this one in less time but still do it safely. What worried me more about the article was the reference to North American pharmaceutical companies being a hindrance to the process because of their usual requirement for exclusive rights which translates to exclusive profits. In this case that could create some negative backlash from the public, though, so perhaps they'll realize for once it's not to their benefit.
