1. Gerald's Game -- New

While trying to spice up their marriage in their remote lake house, Jessie must fight to survive when her husband dies unexpectedly, leaving her handcuffed to their bed frame.

This was really well done. Bruce Greenwood is sufficiently icky, and Carla Gugino is very believable as the vulnerable Jessie Burlingame. The only complaint I have with this Netflix entry is how they tie up the end. More telling than showing, but I guess that's how they have to get all the information into a story.

King is on a roll.

ut, but , but isn't it the 30,th today? isn't the 1,st tomorrow or am i totally wrong? But count it, it is the weekend and the weekend ought to be a part. And its actually good? I would think it would be very difficult to make a good movie of this.

Oh shoot! I thought it was the 1st. Well, that is still my first one. I'll be missing in action for most of this year, so am trying to watch some before I am gone. I will add some today too.

It's that time of year! Welcome back to the 2017 SKMB October Horror Movie Marathon!

Here's how it works:
  • Watch scary/horror movies in October...whatever you think is horror is fine!
  • Talk about them here, or at least list the title
  • At the end of the month, we tally up how many horror movies you watched
  • 1-12 movies: Bangor Buddies
  • 13-18 movies: Tet-Mates
  • 19-30 movies: Horrorslingers
  • 31 movies or more: Ultimate Kings of Horror!
Even if you only watch one or two scary movies, this is a great thread for horror movie enthusiasts to share their finds and talk some horror! Join us, we all FLOAT down here!

KURBENS LIST

1. The Blob (the 1988 version). Not bad at all for a remake. I had seen the original with Steve McQueen but has missed this somehow. With Kevin Dillon and Shawnee Smith in the leads. Its a good creature movie if not anything special. Frank Darabont wrote the scribt and Dillons characters name is Flagg! Wonder if he sought Kings attention for later cooperations?3/5

KURBENS LIST

1. The Blob (the 1988 version).
2. Splinter (2008). inspired by The Thing i think. Here the center is a gasstation and its unhappy inhabitants are besieged by a creature escaped from a science facility. It only wants one thing, To Feed! Minimalistic in construction but not bad. 3/5

October is my favorite month for many reasons, not the least of which it being the month my wife and I got hitched. I try to watch one of my favorite horror or appropriately themed movies each day (with a few days getting a couple in) for the month. Most of these are my favorite films which I only watch once a year. I do this because it really sets up the ritual properly. I remember as a kid so enjoying those films they only showed once a year (there was always big build up). Today we can watch whatever we want whenever we want, so we have to schedule it ourselves if we want to make it special. For Oct. 1 I watched (just this morning):

1. Ginger Snaps

2. The Hallow -- New

A family who moved into a remote mill house in Ireland finds themselves in a fight for survival with demonic creatures living in the woods.

Pretty typical horror stuff, but, for some reason, I tend to be way more into foreign-made haunts. This one being set in Ireland with the charm of the countryside and the Irish actors, I thought it was above average.

Joseph Mawle plays Adam, some sort of tree scientist and he really does a fantastic acting job throughout. Nicely done in that respect.

Nothing groundbreaking here in terms of new ideas, but it was a decent movie and I would recommend it just for the cinematography and acting -- again, the story itself is pretty tried and true horror stuff.

3. The Tortured

An upper-middle-class couple's life is destroyed when their only child is kidnapped and killed. Obsessed with revenge, the couple seizes an opportunity to kidnap the killer.

I thought this was a new view to me, but once I got going, I realized I had seen this in the past. It is horribly troubling for many reasons and makes you question, If I were in this same circumstance, what do I wish I could do? if given the chance would I do it?

Erika Christensen is the mother in this, you might remember her from Riding the Bullet.

Good acting and has a nice little twist at the end. Anyone who has children sees this as the ultimate horror movie. Tough one. It peels away that mask of civility, reaches deep into the baser instincts lurking and waiting.

2. Splinter (2008).
3. The Triangle (2009). Melissa George in the lead. Horror, drama, mystery, disaster, psychological.... This movie cpuld be seen as much. A sailing boat (The Triangle of the title) sinks in a storm. The passengers are picked up by a cruiser. Empty but for one person. Who is it. The answer is peeled as in many layers as an onion and i'm still not sure i got everything. Ambitious but a bit confusing at times. 3,5/5

4. Destiny -- New

In "Some Time and Some Place," a loving young couple is riding in a carriage on a country road, when they pick up a hitchhiker, offering him a ride into town. Little do they know, this stranger is Death himself.

If you wikipedia this, nowhere is the word "horror" even mentioned. It is called a "silent German expressionist fantasy romance film," but, I am including it on my Halloween list as it deals with the subject of Death and that, to me, is frightening.

This is a silent movie as stated above, filmed in 1921 with director Fritz Lang at the helm. It is seriously an interesting film.

I am taken aback almost every time I watch a silent movie. The birth of special effects is there.

The settings, props and wardrobes that they had available to them -- the skill of the stage hands to create all these big worlds, ART! Just magnificent!

And the acting -- well, overblown but it had to be to convey so much! As the character Norma Desmond says in Sunset Boulevard:

"We didn't need dialogue. We had faces!"

Must add, there was also brief nudity. That alone for 1921 is shocking and I'm surprised people's heads didn't explode because of it. Of course, sail your boat off American shores and you find a more free-thinking world in regards to nudity and sexuality.

I'm sure they are still washing the brains out of theater chairs here in America when this was first shown.

This has been in my queue to watch for months, and I thought this was a perfect time to do it.

5. Submerged -- New

"A limousine joyride goes berserk in this breathless, pulse-pounding thriller. An ex-soldier turned bodyguard is hired to protect a young woman. But while cruising with a group of friends one night, their stretch limo is run off the road and underwater by a gang of ruthless kidnappers - who then dive in to finish the job. Suddenly it's sink or swim, as the bodyguard must fight to keep the vehicle from becoming a watery grave."

This one was forgettable other than that whole submerged-under-water-and-still-alive stuff. That alone is very scary to me.

Labeled more a thriller, I found the premise sufficient to call it horror. The thought of being buried under anything and still being alive is terrifying.

I love Tim Daly and I am so bummed he was in this. B flicky goodness that it is, I want Tim doing things like my cherished Storm of the Century, not teen schlock. Is this a remake? It might be. But I'm not that interested in looking for that answer. It can stay....wait for it.....
