This got me thinking.

If what you post becomes the property of Facebook, and Stephen King has a facebook, does Facebook own a piece of all Stephen's work he posts about? Maybe not to the stories themselves, but do they own the visuals that Stephen posts? A movie still, an artist's rendering, a photograph?

That could get pretty legally tangled I would think.

Moderator -- how does that work?
Just spitballing, but since his work is already copyrighted he already owns the rights, I would guess..

but, don't we all own the rights to our own stuff? Our kids? our pets? our funny stories? Our photographs of last nights lasagna? Don't we own that without having to get a legal copyright?

So, how do they own it to?

I forget how the wording goes, but when you join fb there is an agreement that gives them implicit rights and ownership to posts and content, if I remember correctly..

No, they can't claim they own any part of his work or any other company's/person's products that they promote on Facebook.

I don't have the exact wording but my understanding is that by posting your material on your Facebook page that gives them a broad license to use your material and so in that respect it becomes their property, but they do not own your material.

But they could use it to promote something, Facebook or another Facebook, Inc. product? They could make money off it?

Not just asking about Stephen King now, but everyone. Could they do a promotional commercial for facebook or another facebook owned company and grab individual people's photos to use in the commercial? Let's say Facebook owns Sandy's Shell Shop. Could they use photos that people have posted to their Facebook page of their vacation on the beach to promote Sandy's Shell Shop?

I'm not a lawyer so can't say unequivocally, but it sounds like they can--and probably have.

Okay, this was interesting because it basically said that yes, Facebook could take your beach photos and use them to promote Sandy's Shell Shop.

So, if Facebook owned a dog food company, it sounds like they could take pictures of Molly and slap it on their bags to promote it. Without them having to give the owner a dime. It's something about fair use and their terms.

Facebook is the Devil. Mark Zuckerberg is a whiny, thieving, snot.
I deleted my account on Facebook yesterday;
Realized I didn't care what strangers had to say.
Feel no need for sharing pictures with those who weren't there.
Seems that I like other people more the less we share.

I don't want to know if I'm connected to a nut
Or someone who hasn't learned to keep their big mouth shut.
Found it even harder to go out and make a friend...
Social media made me unsocial, in the end.

I'm deleting Twitter next... It's not my kind of place.
People rarely get so angry speaking face to face.
This Board is a rare exception... Stephen's fans are nice.
I would stick to posting here, if you want my advice

SKMB is a one of a kind. A safe haven provided so graciously by SK; MsMod, the best of the best for keeping it safe; and a "family" -Ka-Tet of caring members. Never did FB/ Twitter, or whatever. Here and the Weekend playground are my social network.

Handing out trophies and unwarranted praise just for showing up sets unrealistic expectations for children. The real world is not like that at all. It is a competitive, unfair, cruel place. Not everyone makes the team. Not everyone is good at everything. You don't always get want you want. Mom and Dad should not always be bailing you out when you are an adult. If you can't hack it, too bad for you. The earlier kids learn that, the better off they are going to be.
