It has gone off the rails altogether lol. I did not realize that the colours red and green would hurt people who did not believe in CHRISTMAS. When I was growing up, I could not say sh*t, pis*, f*ck or words to that effect. Now kids will not be able to say C*ristmas either lol.

"Any idiot who goes about with 'Merry Christmas' on his lips, should be boiled with his own pudding, and buried with a stake of holly through his heart. He should!".

Thank you Scrooge.

Maybe all children in school should wear masks so we don't have to look at their individual hideous faces. Wow. Things are getting stupid.

Same here. We have 'Sinterklaas' and his helper 'Black Pete'. Now a few people from Suriname want to ban him because he reminds them of slavery. It's a childrens holiday... If THAT is the worst you can think of, racism-wise, you're doing ok in this country.

That was in the news here recently. a politician got his picture taken with Sinterklaas and Black Pete when he was home visiting relatives. It did not go well with his constituents here.

Which is BS. Black Pete is not the SLAVE of Sinterklaas, he is his HELPER. And contrary to what I´ve read in American press about him, he is NOT made fun of, he does NOT have to talk dumb and with an accent, he does NOT have to act like a fool. He is the one that hands out the candy, and the one that climbs the rooftops to put the gifts in the children´s shoes (Because Sinterklaas is too old for that himself). There are several shows and movies around Sinterklaas and Black Petes (He brings a whole 'army' of them), and they are never made fun of or belittled. Children LOVE him. They are a bit scared of Sinterklaas himself, being the big old man with his beard sitting on his white horse, but they aaaaallll love Pete, who is in the crowd handing out candy, performing acrobatics, shaking children's hands, taking pictures with them...

Also, I read in an article that Sinterklaas is our alternative santa claus. He is NOT. We celebrate Sinterklaas on dec 5th, and christmas, WITH SANTA CLAUS, on dec 24th/25th like everybody else. If anything, Santa claus evolved from our Sinterklaas, the similarities are there (Red clothing, gifts down the chimney, lots of helpers, has his own special animal (White horse/reindeer), both saints (Sint nicolaas, Saint Claus) but he is older than Saint Nick. I think, when Coca Cola needed a holiday to promote their merchandise, they took our Sinterklaas (A lot of early americans were Dutch, after all) and transformed him into their own 'saint'. Even their names sound alike: Sin-ter-klaas / san-ta-claus.

Here is a shot for those who don't know Sinterklaas.

Thank you Angelo, it is really good to be able to learn other people's customs directly, rather than from articles on the 'net.

@Angelo Bottigliero so, what you're saying is, Black Pete is comparable to all the little people (elves) here.

Is it usually a black person, or a non-black wearing make-up? (In malls). If make-up, that has very negative connotations in North America. I'll admit, the first time I saw a picture, I did imagine it being a part where the person acted as an intelligent fool, because that's what the make-up brings to mind.

All kinds of people can play Black Pete. More of them are white, obviously, because more white people live here... But in a survey on the street amongst colored people, 85% had no problems with Black Pete whatsoever. I've done the math, and that means that if you take all the people living here, then look at how many of them are 'Non western immigrants' and you assume ALL of those people are black (Which they are not: These also include asians, arabic people), and take out the 85% that has no problems, you are left with less then 1% of the population that would like to see Black Pete gone.

To answer the question, they usually wear make up, lipstick, and a 'afro' wig.

I'm guessing North Americans started objecting because of the make-up. But, they also need to understand the character before saying it's bad. Also, if only black people were allowed to be hired, isn't that illegal? You know, refusing to hire someone because of their colour?

My son's school likes to kind of push things and see just how far they can go. Last year, they had a big black guy dressed in drag as a gay Santa. (I'm not sure if he was supposed to be the real Santa or what....I was to busy laughing.). They also made fun of every religious holiday they could think of....and included the ikea monkey. So, since it was news recently here, I expect to see Black Pete in the performance.

Here is a link to a video of the politician apologizing. He is almost crying, for cripes sake. It goes to show how a tradition can be perceived as offensive

Nova Scotia Liberal breaks down in discussing photo of blackface character - Yahoo News Canada

Wow - is this character (Zwarte Piet) a subject of ridicule? Or is it just because the tradition of 'blackface' is seen as someone making fun of black people? It sounds like the people of Nova Scotia were very offended and this politician was in a lot of hot water as a result.
Is it also (as some have said) true that the character is black from going down chimneys? (or is this just another twist on the story?)

I am wondering who these people are who decide what others can do and say. Do they have a lot of ego and think that the only things acceptable are things that they believe in? Christmas has been around for ages...why change something good? If one does not like it, do not celebrate it, simple. Same goes for the holidays of other religions. I would applaud another person's right to enjoy their customs of faith. Oh well, today's message is NOT bought to you by the colour red or green or the crazy number 25.

Angelo, I'm Catholic, and I have a book that tells about Black Peter so: When Nicholas was imprisoned, in an attempt to get him to forsake his religion, the prisoners were forced to do hard labour (I think it was mining). Nicholas was also tortured by his captors, and one of his tortures was that spikes were driven through his thighs, making it difficult for him to walk at times. 'Peter' was a fellow prisoner, likely Ethiopian, who carried the future saint around when he couldn't walk. He converted to Christianity, continued as Nicholas' helper once they were out of prison, and was even with him at the council of Nicea (where the church leaders developed the Nicene Creed). Peter was certainly NOT a slave.
