How far is too far? Have we reached that yet? Pretty soon the P.C pendulum will have swung so far around that it'll come back and hit us in the arse.

I agree.

I was shocked to find out from my sister that in the schools my niece and nephews go to it is against the rules to wish any Christmas or Hanukah greetings, or give cards. Christmas trees (which really are of pagan origin, so should be allowed) are NOT ALLOWED. They have a winter party, but no imagery suggestive of anything Christmas is allowed. The kids can't even wear Santa hats on the last day before Christmas (yeah, Christmas!) break lets out.

Bah humbug indeed.

This reminds me of a South Park episode about the production of the school Christmas (whoops! winter) pageant. The parents were all objecting to everything an were intent on stripping out every single thing that had anything to do with the holiday (religious and secular things both). Well, they ended up with the kids doing some awful modern dance thing dressed in gray smocks to the musical accompaniment of some repetitive droning sound. Of course the parent all started complaining, "this is awful", "who is responsible for this fiasco"?, "you call this a holiday pageant"?

It was hysterical, and spot on.

So I say to you all: Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukah, Kwanza Greetings and whatever other greeting I may have missed, as I get ready to put up my Christmas tree, hang the lights and set up my nativity set.

This makes me so incredibly sad.

i'm a non-deity witch and i LOVE Christmas.... my husband is a Catholic and he enjoys Solstice and Yule with me. This weekend we cut bows together and decorated the house... i adore Santa Claus so we have antique toys, postcards and art of him all over the house. We had our Victorian bows, berries, bows and lights up outside by December 6th.

i think people who want to abolish traditions are the worst sort of people..... they have mean hearts and joyless souls. I read an article a few years back where a small town in Scotland was no longer allowed to erect a tree in the town square because the new Muslim population found it offensive. This town had been erecting and decorating their special tree together for generations... since a time when Victoria first brought the idea to the British Isles from Germany. If these religious Muslims found it so appalling that this festivity took place then they should have damned well moved. And quite frankly, i don't understand why a local judge would change a tradition just to suit a few newbies that chose to live there. Know what i think? Tough ****. Go elsewhere. The judges ruling did nothing but incite arguments and fights.

And there's NO joy in that.

Frisco (the town in the article) is one of those yuppie towns north of Dallas, populated by way too many outspoken rich people who want to rule the world.

Texas laws are actually quite different. Texas Governor Perry signed what is dubbed as the "Merry Christmas" bill into law in June. It removes legal risks of saying "Merry Christmas" in schools while also protecting traditional holiday symbols, such as a menorah or nativity scene, so long as more than one religion and a secular symbol are also reflected. The law protects Christmas and other holiday celebrations in Texas public schools from legal challenges.

Perry said, "I realize it's only June but the holidays are coming early this year," "It's a shame that a bill like this one I'm signing today is even required, but I'm glad that we're standing up for religious freedom in this state. Religious freedom does not mean freedom from religion."

I think we need to separate Christmas and Saint Nicholas Day (which was the original gift giving holiday before greedy merchants decided more people would buy gifts if Saint Nicholas Day and Christmas became a combined holiday). Greedy merchants have turned Christmas into a generic peace on earth - give everyone of any faith a gift holiday... which would be better suited to Saint Nicholas Day. How did Christians allow this to happen? I don't think people of other religions would ever allow their holidays to become so horribly exploited.

In many countries, Christmas is a religious holiday and gifts are given on Jan 6 (Epiphany, the celebration of the Wise Men reaching the Holy Family.). It seems to be mainly Americans who struggle with the proper place for The Greed Machine. I have friends all over the world, and none in any other country go anywhere near as overboard as we do, with the gifts or anything else.

AND... as long as we're on the subject... how often do y'all see Christmas cards depicting Mother and Child or a nativity scene?

They're around, just like there are cards for those who want to give general, non religious well-wishes in a happy season. They all have their place :) As long as we can generally be grateful and happy for each other, that's good enough for me :m_stocking:

Canadians, too. My childhood days in Newfoundland were, somewhat, different though. We celebrated the days of Christmas...not just one day. We had mummering. We would dress up and go from door to door. Knocking on the doors, we would ask if the mummers were allowed in. Then there would be guessing to find out who everyone was under their masks, etc. Christmas was more about house parties, pots of soup, fruit-cake and syrup(wine and hard liquor for the adults). The focus wasn't so much on the gifts. I know my mom was quite the seamstress and knitter. Homemade caps and scarfes were the usual gift....or vamps(SharonC knows what they are).

Isn't there a line in a King story, the mummers are following us...let's all walk a little faster? Or maybe that was mummy and is following. But then to the uninitiated, a bunch in masks following behind might cause on to hasten. So what are vamps? :)

The people who make these decisions are those in power more and more of whom have contracted the contagious disease known as Political Correctness, which attacks human intellect, rendering its victims powerless to use reason. They are incapable of realizing that the concept of political correctness exists only to placate the fear of the truth, and of speaking it.

I just want to pipe in here to say that in this case there is actually a law AGAINST what the school is doing. They are breaking the law by banning this. So.... That's all. I just think it's important to know all the facts.
