So we know that B/B changed into his winter gear, including winter coat and boots at the beginning of chapter 28(pg391), in preparation for his encounter with Hodges. He is sitting behind the computer waiting for Hodges arrival, which he will witness via videocam. When he sees an approaching vehicle, undoubtedly driven by Det. Ret., he will set off to lie in wait behind the stack of firewood. This must happen fairly quickly because Hodges has already turned onto camp road. B/B certainly didn't change into loafers before going out to the woodpile. And when he comes back into Heads and Skins, he's got his gun on two adversaries. The encounter with Hodges and Gibney plays out to the dismay of B/B and he ends up outside and in the path of the SnowCat, at which point he slips and falls because of Babineau's "expensive loafers". This seems like something SK's editors/readers should have caught. I still loved the series, but this was disappointing. I guess it happens to the best of them.

...not making excuses for a possible faux pas of the Inkslinger, but it IS conceivable that he kicked off the boots upon entering the "lodge"...I have done it with winter boots and shoes underneath...
