Poe is a master of atmosphere. This story is no exception. The narrator feels very real, perhaps because the author had similar issues. As to the supernatural v. not aspect, Poe left it that way on purpose. For the audience of his day this was uncomfortable, which makes the story even creepier. Me being me, I come down on the supernatural side.

This is my black cat

What a cute kitty! I used to have a black cat, she was very pretty and my best friend, sadly she passed away last year

...this little gem shows off Poe at his grim best...like Spidey, I cringed at the animal abuse-but understood that it only made the denouement more tasty....cats keep their own counsel, but this maligned feline put paid to it’s “human“....no wonder there is such a cloak of superstition wrapped around the ink furred critters....

Good story. I have a love/hate thing with the language of the day. So poetic, and flowery -- romantic sounding even for a slasher. It's hard to work up any sort of fear when it all sounds so "civilized."

As you all have mentioned, another take on that tell tale heart.

Yes but did you realize how similar it was to “The Tell-tale Heart”?
