There was a good one I saw a few years ago about the Amish "rite of passage" called Devil's Playground. Basically, the Amish send their teenagers out into the world to face all the world's temptations and then it's up to the kids whether they come back or not. The documentary follows a few kids through their wild years. Surprisingly, most of the kids end up coming back and leaving their wild days behind them. It's completely opposite of what most of us would do as parents. It's a fascinating documentary. I did not know a lot about the Amish and It was kind of shocking to see these kids smoking and drinking and partying. :)

On TV there was an incredible documentary on the World Trade Center attack. The film consisted entirely of footage shot by several individuals, many of whom were journalists, some were people like you and me. I'm frustrated for the time being unable to locate the DVD I consequently purchased, nor any such Youtubes, in order to post an actual title. Intend to get back to you...

Ok, I'm certain that the documentary to which I refer is 9/11 Attacks - 102 Minutes That Changed America. Youtube has it in installments.

I am hooked on paranormal documentaries. Haven't found any recent ones though, was hoping for some good ones in October. Sometimes I think the over-abundance of weekly ghost hunting and UFO shows have taken away from the unique paranormal documentary area in recent years. =/ But would love to see some new stuff on The Jersey Devil, Mothman and stuff like that. =)

A really sad but interesting film I watched was Meet the Fokkens, 2 Dutch sisters who worked the red light district in Amsterdam for 50 years, and one was still doing it at 70!

This odd slice of someone else's life of sexual freedom was quite alarming to me -- but the world outside of America has always led the way in sexuality.

Have you watched "The Eyes of the Mothman?" I watched that recently on Netflix and thought it was really good. Nova did a good one about the Easter Island moai. Not "paranormal" as such but very interesting.

I've been watching a lot of Kennedy docs and docu-dramas. Some provide things I didn't know, most things I remember as a 4th grader as it happened. I remember being so scared because our idiot teacher at the time told us this could mean war was coming, and I went home and cried and prayed. Imagine a 9 year old's feelings! I'll never forget that.

And little kids twist and magnify things into such scary entities! Poor little girl you.

I watched Eyes of the Mothman last night. I'm not sure what I think about all that. My mind goes more to the chemical spill mutating some bird. But you would think in all these years, they would have found a carcass, like Sasquatch. Of course, the one scientist did say that there were what, 70 million species on Earth and we only know of 1.5 of them? (I may have those figures totally wrong, but it was huge.)

So true! Some things little ones are traumatized and the one doing it just doesn't get it, do they?
It's funny how kids interpret things in their own mind. Just a hijack but related to your post as a personal example -- Someone ( an adult but not my mom or dad) told me about where babies come from. They said that the man has the seed and the woman had an egg and the seed had to get to the egg to make a baby. Details of how that occurred were not given. I guess this was age appropriate information and they thought it was enough. Gosh! I wish I could remember who told me this! Anyway, in my kid mind, I pictured a watermelon seed getting spit into the woman's mouth to go down to her tummy and get to the chicken egg I knew was just waiting there.

It was baffling and very weird to think I might have a chicken egg in my gut.

There is a very interesting series that I think aired on PBS a few years ago. Now, you have to watch this with very open mind and not believe everything you see and hear. It was a 9 part series and each part was a different conspiracy theory (mob, Johnson, etc) and presented both sides of each theory. There is a lot of BS in this (and they tell you so) but it is interesting to see how each theory came about and gained traction over the years. I think the purpose of this documentary is more about the art of the conspiracy theory than it is anything else but it is incredibly fascinating because each theory does have some elements of truth.

Last night, I watched a 2006 documentary about Ronald DeFeo. He's the guy who shot and killed his entire family in Amityville, NY in 1974.
Yes, that Amityville....
It included interviews with police, neighbors, friends, and with DeFeo, himself from prison as well as photos taken at the scene.
The entire time I watched, and listened to his responses to the questions, it left me with an uneasy feeling. This might sound weird.....but there is nothing behind the man's eyes....they are just dark and void of anything resembling a soul. I didn't sleep very well after watching the interview.

DNA evidence led to the release of the West Memphis 3 last year. I pray they find the person/persons responsible for those horrible murders.
This is well worth watching.
West of Memphis, here's a trailer.

I’m a documentary junkie. The latest I watched was "Out of Ireland: The Hit Songs and Artists of Irish Music"

Did anybody here see "The Horrors of Stephen King"? It's been a few years since I've seen it, but I thought it was fascinating and done really well. I wonder what Stephen King thought of the final product?
