Without the transponder on I can see how it could be lost. Not so sure anyone is looking better at this point, but I see what you are saying.

You think China could be ripe for a terrorist attack from this mystery? Wouldn't that be something........awful.

It would be terrible. LOTS of possibility for loss of life, though--a big 'show'. I certainly hope it's just my brain spinning tales (too much reading/research into terrorism--damn Pol. Sci. degree HAHA).

It's just possible that the entire cockpit went whackadoo and the pilot had to make an emergency landing somewhere remote (although it would be hard to find an island with a long enough landing zone for a 777 that isn't occupied). Maybe where cell phones don't work? I think I want to believe that. *makes my mind up to think positive*

As far as the transponders, I thought they were situated specifically so they CAN'T be turned off,for situations just such as this..
Do you mean the 'flight data recorder'? The nickname for that is the 'black box' but actually it is bright orange. It is supposed to send a homing signal out so that Search and Rescue techs can find the downed plane. (and yeah you are right - you cannot just turn these things off).

I agree with @arista actually - it does seem sort of "Bermuda Triangle-ish"

I believe the transponder is separate from the black box, it is a location beacon..

This situation only gets worst----- Prayers continue/ closure is needed!

The Malaysian authorities also said debris that Chinese satellites were said to have spotted floating in the South China Sea were not found by vessels dispatched to the area.

Mr. Hishammuddin, who is also the country’s acting transport minister, said officials had contacted counterparts in the Chinese government who told them, “The images were released by mistake and did not show any debris.”

I'd read one statement, or maybe I heard it, about the sat-photo of what was thought to be wreckage...something about 'this is the same amount of time it took to find' some other crash site. But then there was that soccer team that crashed in the Andes. Remember that? They didn't find them forever...made that movie about them. So I dunno, maybe it's possible they crashed on land, jungle terrain, thick canopy so on so forth. Shipmate and I lost a ship this once in Long Beach so losing big things can happen. We're wandering the base looking for it, keep bumping into these other two sailors, probably lost as well. It happens.

Transponder is separate from the black box, and can apparently be turned off (which sounds insane to me). Chinese are denying Rolls Royce's assertion that plane's engines were in operation for 4 hours after, but... I'd put my money on RR. Like I said before, getting accurate info from the East can be tricky, especially if it makes them look bad.

It looks like foul play but with no one wanting to take credit for it, that doesn't sound too likely either. This is a strange one.
One thing to consider there, apparently the terrorists are getting wise to ELINT signals being used to track them, so they may have refrained from cell or radio traffic..if that is what we have here.It all sounds very bad for a happy ending tho..

Yup. I've been thinking terrorists (we don't hear about Indonesian cells much here in the US, but they're big international news) from the start. I truly hope that's not right, or if they do hit something with the plane, they let the passengers off. Not likely, but there's always hope. The fact that it's been this long and no one has claimed responsibility can go either way: the plane truly went down & it's just not been found, or what's been planned is very big. Not a great outcome either way.
