Said this before, but if a grandfather had not died in the mine, and had not the grandmother remarried (some Swedish guy who gave us our last name)...and had my cousin down in Maryland been born before me (his b-day is in November, mine is August)...my name would have been "Waino Kauppi"...pronounced, "wino cow-pee". My life has been rough enough, yes sir, ghee-duxia & buoy-gullia. Mom had it rough, too...her maiden name was Wanhapia..."juan-hop-pee-ah"..."ancient yard" in Finn...so all her classmates said so you wanna-pee-huh?
Explains this major bed-wetting episode I went through.

Went to school with a girl whose last name was "Homework"...Nancy or Delores, her first. Another had the last name "Gildersleeve"...not unusual...but it is a name that came over on the Mayflower.

Thomas Pynchon has a pile of unusual character names in his stories...Mike Fallopian, one among many.

Worked in a place where I had access to records...and I recall one whose last name was "Rambo"...if only because the movie was concurrent w/my employment.

Mom's name sounded like "wanna hop ya"? Unfortunate.

I never imagined such a thing possible.

Good lead! Thanx!

Harry Crews is another whose stories contain more than a few unusual names (the other, Pynchon, from an earlier post)...I did that tag-thing, blunthead, in another thread. Did that work?
Crews has characters w/names like Foot, Stump, Too Much...Dorothy Turnipseed...transformed into Shereel Dupont, leading contender in the Ms. Cosmos contest under the guidance of Russell "Muscle" Morgan...Oyster Boy and Charity in The Body...Willalee Bookatee Hull, Gerd, & Didymus in The Gospel Singer....Hickum Looney in The Mulching of America. If you've never read any Crews, you're missing a treat.
