Okay, I'm almost done with the first book. Also just finished season 6. A few observations:

1. George is just an okay writer. He creates some memorable characters and places but his syntax is sometimes weird. He's obsessive about clothing and armor. He gets bogged down in details often to the point of nearly becoming boring. But he's got a solid foundation in the main plot and successfully threads the subplots into it.

2. Martin played a lot of D&D. Some of the creatures are right out of an AD&D Monster Manual. The items, armor, swords and battles feel very much like campaigns. All we need is a bunch of dice. :encouragement:

3. Tyrion is one of the best characters in any fantasy book, IMO. Ever.
A main inspiration for the plot must have been the War of the Roses between the two noble houses York (Stark) and Lancaster (Lannister) in England during the 15,th century. In a fantasycover of course.
