My oldest son was born at 23 weeks and weighed around 470 gm (1.04 lb). He was in the hospital for 4 months, had two surgeries and even coded twice. It was a very difficult experience for me and my wife to go through and became the basis for one of my first screenplays called "18%" which was the estimated chance of his survival according to the doctor. Historically girls do much better than boys since they develop faster even in the womb.

Despite writing about the experience as a film script (and a partially completed novel) I am often brought to tears at just the thought of those four months in the NICU. I think I have suffered PTSD for a long time actually. And we would later endure another NICU experience with our second son who was born at 29 weeks and weighed 3 lbs. But thanks to God, science and all the amazing hospital staff, both of my children are miracles and perfectly healthy today.

My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.
Thankful both your children are well today.

My cousin’s family would appreciate any prayers anyone wishes to send their way.

Her great granddaughter was born 1 1/2 weeks ago, weighing 480 gm. She was due August 22. The baby’s mom, who I have never met, started a Facebook blog to keep the family up to date on progress. The posts are written by the baby, and with such humour. Yesterday’s post started like this: “goood morning everyone!! you’ll never guess what i’m doing today! i’m getting a very early start on my modelling career! someone is coming to take some pictures of me and my mommy and daddy to put on a website they are creating to help families in the NICU! i bet there’s not too many 24 weekers that get to say they’re a model!

Baby is doing well and has gained 70 gm.

I don’t think it’s appropriate for me to share her pictures, but here is one picture to give you an idea of the baby’s size. The big diaper is a preemie diaper. The little one is the one this baby is wearing....and it’s huge on her.

That is incredible that such a tiny baby can be kept alive. There are 454 gm in one pound!

Good luck and positive thoughts that your great granddaughter makes it to a healthy life!

Great story and so uplifting - I am very happy that both your children turned out perfectly healthy - this must give all parents of such babies a lot of hope.

Thank you for sharing. So sorry your family went through so much.

This is the doctor taking care of my cousin’s great-grand-daughter. I don’t know if PDA is why your son required surgery. It is one of the issue Miss P is dealing with, and there seems to be some advancement in preventing surgery.

So good to hear all is well today! Scary thing to go through. I can't begin to imagine the helpless feelings that would cause.

Little Miss P is almost 3 weeks old. When I saw the picture posted on Mother's Day I commented that she was starting to fill in those micro-preemie diapers. Mom laughed and said she’s not big enough for micro-preemie. She’s in nano-preemie.

There is something smaller than micro-preemie...

Her eyes have opened, but she has no control at all over them. Still no brain bleed, which is good....obviously.
