Thanks, everyone! You guys are SO sweet!

I'm more nervous about the decision I then have to make if I get than I am of the interview.

But I just got my travel info and I have TONS of time around my interview to look around so I'll be doing some exploring. Hubby's not going to go so it's up to me to scout it out and get all of the good info!

I actually read about an area named Ballard that seems really good for us. Anyone have any thoughts?

Ballard is a great area! There's a huge skandanavian(sp) population there, or at least there was a while ago. It's become more gentrified over the years. You should go check out the Ballard locks- it's always fun to watch the boats come up the channel into the lock. I wish I still lived over there so I could be a tour guide. Be sure to check out the Goodwill on Dearborn! It's the largest Goodwill on the west coast, no fooling! Book section is HUGE! You also have to try Pagliacci Pizza- I'm sure they have vegetarian pizza- they have such good crust! Check out the Capitol Hill area too- lots of shops and restaurants and the 'vibe' is cool (it's the 'gay' section of Seattle)! Be sure to find the troll under the fremont bridge!

I wish you did too!

I will definitely check these out.

Other people have told me I'd love Capitol Hill as well so I'll head over there as well.

I think I may stay away from trolls, though!!!

That's the section I lived in although a little closer to Crown Hill than the business area of Ballard with the shops and restaurants. Not so much there with Victorian or craftsman style homes--the Queen Anne area had a lot more of those--but it was a great place to live. I agree about the locks being interesting to visit. It's near Green Lake and the bus lines were great to get to downtown. No idea what it's like now, though, as I moved out in 1980 so a lot could have changed. The advice KRF is giving you is probably much more relevant. :)

So, I've been looking at housing prices in Seattle. They are SOOOOOOO much more expensive than Portland!!!!
Oh yeppers! That is why I live in Spokane- half (or less) of what you'd pay in Seattle. Folks over that-a-way are still paying for the Kingdome and it was destroyed years ago! have you thought about living more on the outskirts of the Seattle area? Maybe north in Everett? I used to live there and Pats lives there now and the prices might be alittle more cheaper.

Nope! That's what I need you guys for - to tell me! Is it commutable?

Not knowing much about the area, I would like to point out the obvious....moving out of LA means further away from earthquakes and sliding off into the ocean. Plus, probably less crazy. BUT....moving closer to a volcano.....:devilish:
Actually, I have a friend who is close to Seattle and they love it there. I'm sure you will love it and good luck on the interview, I hope you do great as I believe you will.

Yes, the metro buses run almost everywhere in the outer (and inner) Seattle areas and they have already started to put in a light rail system that is supposed to reach pretty much all of the outlying areas eventually (I think right now it goes from south past the airport into Seattle). Not that hard to get around. As for being 'commutable', rush hour traffic starts at 5 am and last till about 7pm during the weekdays. There are carpool lanes where there is a seperate lane on the freeways just for vehicles that have two or more folks in them. Ask the company that you're interviewing with if they supplement either parking costs or bus passes. Or if they have flexable work schedules, like letting you come in at 6am to avoid the traffic. Some companies do. The traffic was one of the major reasons for my leaving a city that I lived in for over 30 years. I lived 13 miles from work and somedays it took me over an hour to get home. But, if you're into riding the bus to get around it shouldn't be too bad.

Ahhh, but we do have earthquakes in Seattle, I was there for the last two big ones. Not fun!

I was going to say that too! Apparently (just like So Cal!) they are overdue for a big one again.

Being the disaster prepared girl I am, I'm also a little concerned about being trapped on what's essentially an island!

That's as bad as my commute now!! 35 miles and two hours.

The interview is from 9 to 4 with a lunch break with two of the people I'd be working for so I'll talk to them about their commutes.

Thank you!!!

Are you talking about Mercer Island?

Seattle was also the city that spawned the best bands of all time. It's documented, but you don't have to look it up, just take my word for it, I wouldn't lie to my fellow SKMB members.:) Good luck on your interview and if you see Eddie Vedder up there anywhere, just tell him "Thanks" for me:)
