I know where the comma goes but I find sometimes it is overused. I have one doctor at work who dictates in a very choppy fashion and inserts way too many commas! (His nickname isboy I need it...Masters in writing and still don't know where the comma goes!

But not for the writing of "himself" I hope?Seems like we were told to use them a lot more when I was in school back in the Dark Ages learning grammar rules than they do these days. I find myself deleting them or purposely not using them as much to try to keep with the current trends of less is the way to go.

Isn't that the truth? One of the most difficult things for me to re-learn was sentence spacing--my hand automatically double spaced between sentences, as I was taught in junior high typing (Typewriters were made of rocks and jungle twine back then ;D). Now it's all single spacing *sigh* And I will never give up the Oxford comma. IT'S NECESSARY SO MANY TIMES!Seems like we were told to use them a lot more when I was in school back in the Dark Ages learning grammar rules than they do these days. I find myself deleting them or purposely not using them as much to try to keep with the current trends of less is the way to go.
I know what you mean! I am an English major (almost a senior, praise all that is holy!) and I struggle with the darn little things all the time!boy I need it...Masters in writing and still don't know where the comma goes!
I feel you, I struggle with this like crazy! and then I get mad at myself. I love stories; reading them, writing them, having them play in my head like children, but sometimes its just so hard to sit down and write them out! And sometimes reading just doesn't fit he agenda. I will say though, I read more than I write, which can be a good thing I suppose. The problem I have is, sometimes when I should be writing I am reading. The good thing is, when this happens I tell myself not to feel too guilty because reading is like studying!I'm good with words… I love words… but am too lazy to write. I lack the drive Sai King and other writers have so I just enjoy other people's writing. However, a woman came up to me at the mall a couple of weeks ago and asked me if I was a writer or an artist because of my fashion style… or lack thereof!!
Amen! It's alright, we all do it. Just remember to edit, re-edit and re-edit again before sending anything out. Or have someone else do it also, another set of eyes won't hurt. I'm just happy to see that someone your age still enjoys to read and doublely glad that you want to write!
That's exactly what I've been doing for a long time now. I guess I started to become aware of my misuse of commas while reading sK. I believe I'm learning a whole lot about grammar via him. Back in the day we were taught to use commas in all kinds of places which nowadays I presume are inappropriate. ("Back in the day, we were taught to use commas in all kinds of places, which nowadays, I presume, are inappropriate.") The way I'm learning to approach the question is in terms of how a sentence sounds when read. Reading commas always causes an interruption or a pause in flow. Sometimes the interruption is necessary, but much more of the time it seems to interfere. Also, I'm learning that sometimes to rearrange a sentence's parts in the first place eliminates the need for certain punctuation; in other words, the thought can be better stated. Also, sometimes a comma is necessary for clarification more so than to cause a pause or an interruption.Seems like we were told to use them a lot more when I was in school back in the Dark Ages learning grammar rules than they do these days. I find myself deleting them or purposely not using them as much to try to keep with the current trends of less is the way to go.
