John Cleese recently appeared locally to talk and take questions after the showing of ‘Monty Python and the Holy Grail.’ A couple tidbits about the movie he revealed: The film only cost $400,000 to make. And it wouldn’t even have been made were it not for investments by the likes of Pink Floyd and Led Zepplin. Because of the tight budget they couldn’t afford a single horse for the movie. That’s when the came up with the clopping of coconuts to simulate the knights riding horses. The Black Knight sketch ('It’s only a flesh wound') was loosely based on a true story from ancient Rome he heard from an English teacher when he was young. Cleese hates the ending of Holy Grail. They ended it with beautiful shots, heavenly choirs, shots of boats that look like dragons and other stuff, basically just to say ‘Hey, look! We can make a proper movie!’ He said they finished the movie that way because they couldn’t think of any other way to finish it. Cleese also didn’t like the three-headed giant skit. Seems one of the Pythons had not written a lot of the film, and he wrote that sketch. And the rest of the Pythons didn’t have the heart to cut it.
