Well, there's a great illustration of irony found in O. Henry's "The Gift of the Magi", a simple but very powerful short story. A poor young couple struggles to find a way to give each other a Christmas gift. He sells his watch to buy beautiful combs for her long hair, she sells her long hair to buy a chain for his watch. I read it when I was young and I've thought of it every holiday season since.

I always thought Alanis Morissette expressed irony perfectly by singing a song called "Ironic" that had nothing to do with irony, just unfortunate life situations.
