BROOKSVILLE — An elderly woman was flown to a hospital early Monday morning after she was attacked by three dogs in Hernando County, deputies said.

The Hernando County Sheriff's Office said firefighters, deputies and animal control officers responded to the call around 7:30 a.m. on Spring Lake Highway to find the victim, not named by deputies, suffering from severe dog bites to both of her legs.

Firefighters treated her at the scene before she was flown to a trauma center for advanced care. She was in stable condition early Monday afternoon.

Deputies said the woman was walking on Spring Lake Highway, something she regularly does, when the three dogs attacked her.

A witness called 911, deputies said. That same person attempted to help the woman by performing basic first aid on her wounds while waiting for rescue workers.

During the 911 call, the witness told operators the three dogs that attacked the woman were still running loose in the area — describing them as pit bulls, deputies said.

The dogs' owner, Ralph Hughes, of Brooksville, has been charged with three counts of owning a public nuisance animal and three counts of owning an unrestrained animal.

Deputies and animal control officers said one or more of the dogs tried to attack them when they arrived at the scene. The Sheriff's Office said bean bag rounds were used to subdue the dogs and that all three were then taken to Hernando County Animal Services.

Deputies said Hughes surrendered all three dogs for euthanasia because he believes they are too aggressive.

We have neighbors up the street that have a pit bull and they let the kids walk it all the time. They range in age from 5 or 6 to about 13 and they are all too small to handle the dog if he would decide to charge at someone. I am too small to handle a dog like that! We do not have a fence, so if that dog would decide to come after one of us or our little dog...it would be bad.

These kids have zero respect for other people's property. The oldest girl was walking along one day (not with the dog) and shredding mail and tossing it in yards. We were outside and Scott hollered at her to pick up everything she threw in our yard. She did it, but muttered under her breath and gave us dirty looks the whole time. The younger boys I have had to ask more than once to get out of our yard. So now they ride their bikes to the curb in front of our house and just sit there and stare. It is creepy, even if they are little kids! They throw balls at cars, and last summer when that car came out of park or whatever happened and rolled backwards down the street and through 2 front yards before it stopped, (no one was hurt thank goodness) the police who responded questioned them. No other kids on the block got questioned. So did they cause it?

Anyway, all this to say they don't seem to care about much of anything, so they are not responsible enough to have a breed of dog like a pit bull.

We had a case on the beach a while back where a Pit Bull got away from a girl that was too small to handle it and attacked someone.

Another thing that scares me when I'm walking a dog is seeing kids come charging out of a house and leaving the door standing open. You never know what kind of dog might come charging out of an open front door.

On Sunday, my dog was attacked by a Pit Bull mix breed on my property. I had come home from lunch with my Mom, let Pearl out on the lead, and ran inside to change into some grubbing clothes so I could play with the dog, and dig in some dirt. Just as I zipped my pants, I heard the awfulest scream from my dog that I've ever heard. I ran out the back door, and saw the other dog with its mouth around Pearl's entire upper body, flinging her around like a wet rag. The other dog's owner was there as quickly as I was, and he struggled to get his dog to let Pearl go. My guess is that it took about three minutes to get the dog to let go....longest most awful three minutes of my life. When I saw her laying on the ground, I thought she was dead.....she was so small and so still. Those of you that have been here a while and have seen the photos of Pearl know that she small.....about 14 pounds of Jack Russell Chihuahua. Obviously no match for an 85 pound Pit Bull. I was so terrified. The Pit's owner did try to do the right thing. He was very apologetic, drove me and Pearl to the emergency pet clinic, waited the 5 plus hours it took to patch Pearl up, and paid the total cost. I do believe he is sincerely sorry, and while I am appreciative, I was a little pissed off that he begged me not to report the incident to animal control.....said his dog has never behaved like that before and is registered as an emotional support service pet.......I had to be nice, because we were at the pet clinic, and he was footing the bill, and I didn't have a ride back home, and didn't even bring my purse or cell phone. I'm calling BS on the service pet never behaved like that before story. The good news is that Pearl is going to be okay. She has a whole bunch of stitches and is wearing the cone of shame, and somehow lost most of her front teeth.....I'm secretly hoping that she got a good bite or two in..... I'm also very thankful that the Munchkin was at her dad's house. As traumatic as the scene was for me, it would have devastated her. When Munchkin came home yesterday, Pearl sat up, smiled and barked for the first time since she was hurt.......I swear, my girl is magic.
I am so glad to hear that Pearl will be okay - I think maybe you should report this (even though the guy was nice and foot the bill etc.)

What if the next dog to get attacked doesn't make it? (or it could even be a child)

Dear Friends, Thank you all so much for the well wishes for Pearl.
It is with a broken heart that I tell you my little Pearl passed away this morning due to septic poisoning from her injuries.
I rushed her to the emergency vet, but the bruising and lacerations were too much for her little body to handle. They allowed my daughter and I to say goodbye, and then I asked them to end her suffering. I brought her home and buried her on her hill where she loved to bask in the sun.
