Tonight, I searched for 80s movies on Netflix and found one I'd never seen, Less Than Zero. I found it very moving and that ending was hard to watch. I've since learned that many critics panned it at the time, including Ellis who wrote the novel on which it's based. I think this may be one of Downey's best movies, though. I liked it.

One of the best 80’s movies imho sir. Jamie Gertz, Andrew Mccarthy, Downey Jr, all did great and the first time I saw the movie I was NOT expecting that ending...

The 15:17 To Paris - Clint Eastwood directs a recounting of the terrorism foiled by 3 US servicemen, played by the men themselves. Decent.
50 Shades Freed - once you get past the not-very-erotic erotic bits, this is an OK drama about how rough things are for the very rich.
Father Figures - Twins laid back Owen Wilson and tense uptight Ed Helms go on the road searching for the father they never knew. Quite good fun.

I think the problem with this adaptation is that the source material is only slightly over 300 pages. It just doesn't call for three movies each over two hours long. There's a lot of padding in there.
They made a 26-hour TV series narrated by Olivier on WWII. Fair enough. Jackson did similar with LOTR. Then he did the same thing about, not so much WWII, more a punch up in a pub car park.

LOTR has three distinct books and that was reflected in Jackson's movie adaptations. One movie per book. We're talking well over a thousand pages total. Multiple movies makes sense in that case. Jackson couldn't fit in everything from LOTR in those films there was so much source material.

There is enough data on WWII to have a series much longer than 26 hours and still not be boring.

The Hobbit was just overly long and padded with material not found in the novel.

Robert is so good in this movie. It is hard to watch.

It is a movie that's aged well, too. It felt authentic. (I just now noticed I should have put an apostrophe before 80s.) :heheh:

The lead kid -- what's the actor's name? I couldn't stand him back in the day, I thought he was a terrible actor. As an older actor, I really like him. He was great in Kingdom Hospital.

Andrew McCarthy. Yeah, I agree with you. He was good in this flick, though. Maybe the character was suited for him? Dunno.

I liked the move St. Elmo's Fire he was in with the rest of the 80's "Brat Pack". His character was the strangest one out of all of them.
