The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, for the 6000th time. Some movies just never get old for me.

Isn't that a song? I can't watch movies with lots of gun violence in them and I can't do war movies period, which is a good thing now.
Richard refuses to let people watch war movies around him. I asked if he knew what Platoon was about; I figure he never watched it because none of the Vietnam veterans I know (which amounts to about 4) watched that. He said he knew what it's about, didn't watch it but some of his friends have.
I decided NOT to ask how true it is. I had to leave when the village scene came up. I don't want to know if he saw something like that. The only thing that made me feel better was when he said the movie represented everything that occurred across the 10-yr spectrum but not every person saw everything.
That's good enough for me.
Some things really ARE better left unknown.

There is a song titled The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, recorded by Gene Pitney, and is about 100 years old. I have no problem with most "gun violence" (I hate that term) depicted in movies since most of it isn't very gratuitous. I don't appreciate gratuitousness in movies of any kind (though I do admit not turning the channel if naked women appear). But, I too have avoided movies about Viet Nam. I'm not sure entirely why, or perhaps I simply know that that war hits home for me. Just thinking about watching one of them, and there are great ones to watch, makes me feel bad, depressed. I was draft age during the war. They had the draft lottery and I scored high, so I didn't have to go. Or I didn't have to due to being the only male member of the family to carry on the family name, maybe. Some high school friends I knew had to go and some died there. My poor mom was scared sh!tless I'd have to go. So was I.

I introduced LilMan to the '58 (I think that's what it said on the DVD case) 7th Voyage of Sinbad. The little theatre on base showed that one at the kiddie matinee quite often when I was a kid, and I remembered really liking it. It still has that Harryhausen magic for kids--he loved it.

I'm not a big western fan, but Liberty Valance is one I've watched a few times (I think it's the only western in which John Wayne even tried to act-lol).

My dad was a Vietnam vet, 2 tours, and the source of my huge love of history and movies. He said Platoon got quite a few things right, though it was overdramatized, but Full Metal Jacket got boot camp perfectly. That was sobering, if you've seen that movie.

Love Harryhausen movies (except one with dinosaurs and cowboys.)

I watched Johnny Depp's "The Lone Ranger" last night. What is the big deal? Why did so many critics pan it so badly? When you see the names Johnny Depp, Jerry Bruckheimer and Gore Verbinski you have to know it's going to be nothing more than a fun film to watch. If you're looking for substance - sorry. I had a very good time for 2 1/2 hours.

We've seen it several times. I enjoyed it a lot, and found it funny. I don't think it was meant to be taken so seriously, but hubby and I think it is great fun to watch.

Last night I watched a little flick called Ride the Wild Surf, one of those breezy early 60's surfing movies with Fabian, Shelley Fabares, Tab Hunter and Barbara Eden. It was about what you would expect from the genre, check your brain at the door and have a groovy surfin' time. Just the sight of Barbara Eden in a bikini was worth the 3 bucks I paid for the dvd. Va-va-voom.

The Lone Ranger certainly wasn't a great film, but it wasn't a bad one and certainly didn't deserve the drubbing it got from critics. I liked it but they probably could have cut 30 minutes out of it without any noticeable effect.

I just watched Captain Phillips with Tom Hanks. Hanks gave his usual dependable performance, and I certainly have sympathy for the ordeal that the real life Captain Phillips went through, but the movie just didn't grab me. Maybe it was because I remember reading about all this when it happened and knew how things turned out, but for me the flick was just ok.
